Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I'm very surprised Schiit is talking about a product still in development, I thought Jason had sworn off talking about future products again!

Makes me suspect the product might be farther along than suspected here ...

He's not actually saying anything.  They are working on something new.  It's nowhere near like Rag/Yggy where the goal was publicly known early.  They could scrap this gadget, come up with something different and none of us would have a clue.

Not to belabor the issue, but here's another quote from the same chapter from Jason for you:

It's all academic now though of course!

I've read the book. Still don't think Jason has contradicted himself. For him to say they are working on something new isn't much of a teaser. I would assume at any given point they are trying things outside of the realm of current products. We are getting excited about something that may/may not exist, with no actual timeline so we won't even know when something comes out if it's what he is talking about now

The teaser: We're calling this development The Manhattan Project. As in, never been done before. Components like The Gadget simply have never existed. It is not another anything. A
something never done before
.

The reaction: to promptly throw in guesses that already exist on the market

Maybe the project is to raise the observational skills of the population. No wait, they have teachers for that. Hmm

;) :)

Must be the rumoured schiit ticker, alarm clock made to go off to make sure you listen to your gear every day.

Serious mode now though, how do we know its something we would/want need if everyone is happy with dac>Amp>headphone

Very interesting

And it is not another USB-SPDIF converter, nor another class D amp, nor another room correction system, nor another digital preamp.

We're calling this development The Manhattan Project. As in, never been done before. Components like The Gadget simply have never existed. It is not another anything. As Mike said, this is an undertaking of a magnitude similar to creating the first standalone audio DAC.

Jason, what are you doing? A wise man once said:
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it here again: never, ever, ever, ever, for any reason, no matter how much you’ve had to drink, no matter how much it will change the world forever, no matter how cool and wonderful and groundbreaking you’ve convinced yourself it will be, never ever for any reason talk about future products.

SCNR :)

In all fairness, it was not Jason who leaked The Manhattan Project and The Gadget, it was me.  So let us not blame him.  The original WWII era namesakes were known about in certain circles by name only.  This was keep any armchair engineers who had never built anything their entire lives from generating any noise all about how technically futile the whole project was, and also from tipping their hand to their competitors (Germany and Japan).  That is the end of the similarities.

I also see this as being fundamentally different than saying:

1. "We're going to be doing this Ragnarok thing with these kind of specs, and here's a rendering," then ending up being 2 years late.

2. "Check out the sexy photos of this new Lyr, we plan on shipping them a the end of the month," then ending up being a couple of months late.

Some things you can expect from us:

1. We'll always be developing something new. Always. As in, always. However, many of these experiments won't go to market.

2. Most of the time, it will be a fairly recognizable product. In The Gadget's case, it is not a product that can be likened to other things.

So, when Mike mentioned it, I felt the need to disambiguate (look it up) and reassure everyone that this wasn't gonna be some crazy DAC at 3x the Yggdrasil's price, or a better DAC than Yggdrasil at 1/8 the price, or anything like that. The DAC line is solid. The digital filter is not in flux. Everything is as it should be in DAC-land. Cool?

Hmm...*puts on tin hat*
He said DAC like 4 billion times (4.33 billion if you count "digital"). He said "amp" "Zero" times, which as we all know was a well known Japanese fighter plane from same era as "Manhattan."
Q.E.D. Jason sold the entire amplifier business to Mitsubishi.
