Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I have Apple music but rarely use it. If I like a single song enough I might buy it from iTunes but if I really like something I prefer to buy the cd / vinyl directly from the artist. I use my Mac for ripping cds to a music only hard drive. I hate the way Apple deals with multi artist albums like soundtracks. For serious listening I currently have a raspberry pi running Volumio into Yggy GS.

Never read a word that reviewer writes ever again. At that level they're not doing anything other than trying to fry the speakers (which likely sound like schiit at that level).
I suspect the reviewer did in fact achieve 120 SPL -- at 1cm distance from the 'Maggies'. :smirk:

Are you talking the cat or the beer? 😕

Please don't tell me y'all BBQ cats, too. :scream_cat:

PS- Please don't ever take my humor personally, especially early on a Sunday morning before caffeine has been ingested.

I suggested Apple Music mainly for the reason that Spotify and Tidal are (to me) not as good, in terms of sound quality, as Apple Music.

One does not need to be sucked in to the apple eco. In fact Apple music is available on Android.

In my 2 channel i have a mac mini and in my headphone chain i use an old apple macbook laptop.

Gotcha and I agree Apple Music Hi-Res has superior SQ to the current Spotify 320kbps option. Spotify have been taunting us with the imminent release of Spotify HD, so SQ should be a non-issue at that point. For now, Qobuz delivers all I need for Hi-Res streaming - especially with its increasing Jazz catalog and purchase option. And it integrates wonderfully with Roon at home and Android Auto in my car.

I took the liberty of editing and more accurately describing the DSD situation.
I know some are eager to dismiss DSD/SACD, but new titles appear regularly, especially in Japan. And at least one prominent US has a pricey DAC tailored for DSD.

I recall owning a TEAC DAC capable of DSD a few years ago. I finally gifted it to an employee who was starting out with headphones.

I am not sure if TEAC still makes anything like that, it was maybe seven or eight DACS ago for me.

Now there is a bad idea!

I am very deep into some woodworking today so I sent my wife out to buy up some Balvenie before the price starts changing. I am making every attempt to customize a stereo rack to fit specific Schiit gear and a couple other pieces of tube gear if I have room. Some of the shelves for said rack: 3/4 inch solid cherry with a bit of clear danish oil. They are the perfect width to accommodate a Freya plus, Gungnir, Mjolnir, and hopefully a Sol on top.
very purdy.

Hello all!

Newbie here. I own ZERO pieces of Schiit. But I am looking forward to buying some.

My plan is to buy 2 Vidars and a Freya+ to drive Maggie .7s. I would LOVE to be able to just buy 2 Tyrs, but I also do not want to overpay/overkill the situation.

My question, which is DEFINITELY not original, is under what circumstances will the protection circuits be tripped in this setup? I read in a review that they got their Maggies to 120SPL before there was an issue. Does that align with other users experience? Also, 120 SPL?!?!?!?!! Ummm...I would definitely be evicted AND divorced at that point.

Thanks for your help!
I only have one Vidar, but it happily drives my .7s My Maggies even sound glorious driven by a 40WPC tube amp.

Start with one Vidar. I think you will be very happy.

How does one patinate, since you mentioned it?
Starting with clean solid copper you can do a salt and water mixture on the copper itself then, support the copper, add it to container with ammonia or vinegar in the bottom, not directly on the copper. I use ammonia for deep blues and aquarium salt. Leave overnight with the copper picking up the fumes, (best done in a shed or garage) and you have a patina on the copper. Lightly wash off the excess, let it dry, then use a clear coat of sealer, I generally use Deft. Oh some copper is coated and some contains alloys, copper sold in blank plates and in half inch pipes works well and even that may not be pure copper, just a high percentage. Someone with more than my humble knowledge can sure jump in here.
