Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I have found that software, whether iTunes, Audirvana, or something else, affects how I enjoy the music. Not that I can hear a difference necessarily, but the software can become so frustrating I don't enjoy my listening session. I deal with robot and automation software/hardware issues all day. Last thing I want to do when I get home is mess with a frustrating music interface. Music is my getaway.

Go and try Roon.....The others could not hold Roon's jock....it's not even close...it will make you happy with music again!

...Fire up your favourite amp... plunk on the headphones... and turn off the lights. At the end of the episode, you get a special aural treat... first time it happened to me... I got gooseflesh!

@ScubaMan2017, I liked that. Interesting stuff. I've seen some weird crap in my travels, but thankfully, I've never been chased by the naagloshii...!

Use cloning software instead of drag and drop copying, and you tend to get fewer errors. Plus sometimes the software can identify files with errors.

I'm on a Mac and I swear by (not at) Carbon Copy Cloner. The author kept the software free for over a decade (it's paid now) and I was happy to make donations.

My only issue with the Freya S was the noise level. My speakers are 97dB and there is nowhere for noise to hide. It was fine in passive node. I loved the volume control but I didn’t pay $600 for a passive preamp.

Try buying a balanced passive preamp with remote control anywhere else, and give your wallet a few months to heal. $600 is a flaming bargain even before you factor in the active circuits.

Late to the party/discussion, but how on earth is that true? I read on many reveiw sites that $600+ Ethernet/USB cables polish and shine those bits so much that they are not the same - they are more 3D, more alive with timing and slam, and other hyperbole.

Aw man! I was all ready to buy one of those cables so I'd have shiny bits, too. But then you used "hyperbole" and just ruined the whole thing.

Believe me when I say it pained me to return it. It had everything I wanted in a preamp (although a balance control would be nice.) But my 20 year old Bryston integrated amp was dead quiet in comparison. I still wonder if I got a bad unit. The noise was impossible to ignore.

Please forgive me, this is gonna be wordy. I don't know where else to post this and I know that several of you have backgrounds in computers.

I'm pretty good at troubleshooting Windows OS issues but this one has got me puzzled. My Windows experience hasn't included computer audio related issues (you wouldn't have a DAC connected to a server or desktop in an enterprise environment, especially using a USB).

On 11/10/20, I took delivery of a Lyr 3/Bifrost 2. Bifrost 2 connected same day via USB (initially to available USB 2.0 port) on motherboard I/O panel. From 11/10 thru 11/12 no problems encountered.

The problem manifests itself on the morning of 11/13/20

Nov. 20 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 installed on 11/13/20 -- Windows fails to load (cold boot).

I disconnected the USB cable from the Bifrost 2 and attempted to reboot -- Viloa! Windows 10 loads. Next day, I tried to start my PC and the same thing happens. Again, I disconnect the USB cable and Windows loads. I contacted Microsoft on Monday (11/16/20); tech remotes to my PC runs some diagnostics but the only thing the tech can offer is that my PC is probably old. Yeah, it's 12 y/o but it was running just fine.

Yesterday, I connected to another USB port and this morning -- Windows fails to load. I disconnect the cable and Windows loads.

Drivers are all up to date with the exception of the USB Generic and Root Hub drivers provided by Microsoft. No current drivers available. Ran diagnostics on all drives using Samsung Magician for Boot SSD and CrystalDiskInfo on HDD's -- No reported issues. Drives are healthy. Ran System File Checker (SFC.exe) and Windows Troubleshooter.

At this point, my assessment is that when I power up my PC, if (1) if the Bifrost 2 is connected to any motherboard USB port, Windows will fail to load (2) File corruption, except when running System File Checker (SFC), SFC reports " Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations " (3) PC is getting old, processor could be failing. A couple of times, Windows has failed to load following a warm boot. I disconnect the cable from the Bifrost and reboot which works.

Microsoft hasn't followed-up.

Your thoughts?

For dog's sakes, buy a new computer.
