There are force-limiting tampers, so you can preset some level of force, and the tamper will click when you reach that, sort like a torque wrench but linear, and they're not even that expensive. But that's not even the most important thing in making a good espresso bed: the way you pour in the grinds into the portafilter in the first place can make a big difference too, and often the grinder is multiples more expensive than the brewer itself. Home espresso is a rabbit hole I will not enter.

However, I recently got a higher than 0.1g precision scale (I'm not sure if it's actually that precise) because mixing up your own mineral water at home for coffee brewing involves small amounts of the various additives even when you make a concentrate that's meant to dilute in 1L of water.

Oh, I get it. But I'm still surprised a tamper could make enough difference in a cup of espresso to make a nice one justified on a practical level as opposed to a bling level. Good stuff to know.

Ha! Two words...

I dump ground coffee into the paper filter in my Braun drip coffee maker. If I want espresso I go to a barista I don't make it myself. YMMV.

Ditto...although I'm not as upscale as you on the coffee maker...or should I say MR. Coffee Maker

And...Dump is a good descriptor for my 'technique'

That what I used before. I bought the Braun just because I wanted something that would last longer. I've had my current one for 15 years.

Please stop before someone posts (again) some old Four Yorkshiremen video
That was a good one! :deadhorse:

Just finished making mine an hour ago... 5x2,5 mm, solid copper (5xAWG 13 for the yanks) 50 m set me off $60 plus $30 for the connectors. Already sounds better (or not, still haven’t decided) :smiling_imp: ... Any improvement is probably due to line-level cable routing - less noise.

Edited for missing info.

I don't use accurate measurements when I cook or make coffee. I can go months without dirtying measuring cups/spoons etc. I'm a firm believer in the TLAR method. Yeah, it lets me down sometimes, but not as often as one might think.
