I'm sure he'd love to tell you, but then he'd have to kill you. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Yeah for sure....

Sure would like some insight...ya cant deny the laws of physics.
Like back in my radio days with tuning transmitters, adding caps and inductors to electrically lengthen or shrink the antenna etc.
Maximum power xfer....

Think I have an idea of whats going on here but the source is the source...

ok..

Discovered this stash on Friday!

I have rips of the Analog Productions SACD, the 30th Anniversary SACD, and MoFi Gold CD of DSOTM. I haven't A-B'd them back to back enough to declare an outright winner but I LOVE that Gold CD. In fact, all of Pink Floyd on Gold CD just has a certain addictive heft and punch to the sound quality - those Golds have certainly been instrumental in turning my opinion of PF from a fairly negative view to a pretty healthy one. Took most of my life but I'm finally managing to 'get' Pink Floyd.
PF (and Steppenwolf and ELP) were literally the reason my dad helped me build out a basement bedroom (when I was 12). He helped me build a pair of bass reflex speakers with MR/T being horns and a 12” woofer. Drove them at first with a mono Harman Kardon Tube Integrated Amp. Alas, don’t remember that first turntable. He’d just upgraded to a top of the then line Realistic Receiver and speakers and I got the HK hand me down.

So, still have my brandy-new purchased with paper route money DSOTM LP (and the others, Meddle, and on… I have everything they’ve ever done on LP in multiple pressings in some cases. Never selling. As far as DSOTM goes, best IMO is the MF UHQR.

The older I got, the more I “got” PF… and then came University of Arizona, and then The Wall Live, and, well… yeah, lifetime top 3 rock band (other two are Rush and ELP). Uniquely (again, to me) everything the’ve ever done I appreciate (there are some moments/cuts here and there I could take or leave) everything album is a winner… (Oh well, ummm maybe not ELP Love Beach - but that doesn’t COUNT!)

Art Pepper via Mimir with Loudness at 40%, and gain at -18.1dB. Doin the LIAR thing and loving it.

PS: what do people think of RAM Tubes (Roger Mojeiwski - sp? Heritage)?

I would really like to know what the impedance multiplier is doing or whats the circuitry up to here to make the amp think the load is less "demanding"??

@ArmchairPhilosopher
I can't comment on how Schiit employs the technology, but in general it's a circuit that changes the external impedance load on the driver stage, allowing the amplifier to deliver un-distorted signal into lower impedance loads (or into higher impedance loads, depending) than is ideal. It means you can use a wider variety of headphones (or loudspeakers) safely and without experiencing clipping or high distortion. Using this type of circuit is more common in tube amps than in SS amps.

Ha! Good luck. He wouldn't even tell me what trips the protection circuit. 🤪

@ArmchairPhilosopher What triggers the protection circuit in the Valhalla 3? Is it just current, or something more sophisticated?

Ask Jason, analog is his métier.

My brother took me to two PF concerts before DSOM when I was 14/15 (Music Hall Boston 11/71 & 5/72). Remember them quite well. Having already been listening to Harry Partch and the atonal (classical and jazz) by then I thought it was quite good. Then Tangerine Dream, King Crimson, Gong (Hillage), etc.

As for the impedance multiplier, it's nothing new. It will be some combination of resistors and capacitors.

You had me at Gong/Hillage. :beerchug:

Valhalla 3 Impedance Multiplier is probably similar topology to the one on FV, possibly with a few tweaks added (given the time between FV and VH3 product releases).

found a schematic on the web one-time (can't find it now, ofc) that used a low value series current sense resistor and a SS power amp with feedback and another low-value resistor tied between the SS power amp and the tube output/ low R node, input to the SS amp via a resistor network such that the majority of the load current was provided by the power amp (zero voltage gain) and overall amp gain provided by the tube gain stage and tube cathode follower stage. somewhat akin to helper locomotives on freight trains where the main locomotive controls the speed, braking etc.
