Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Don't forget another that is a German phoneticized spelling of an English word for excrement. Not quite as poetic.
I still run into people who do not know the brand, I often get funny looks when I mention it.🤪

Probably not. I did the same thing that adapter does (disconnected 5V) manually with a test cable and Mimir isn't recognized.
Yeah. Schiit likely needs 5v to to power the USB receiver chip. Some DACs need it; some don't. Schiit appears to need it. :(

The microcontroller that also handles Unison is also powered through the USB port in addition to the wall wart.
It's done that way because if it would only be powered through the wall wart and you switched Mimir off, the host (PC, Mac, streamer, whatever) would lose contact to Mimir and Mimir would disappear from the connected devices, including that annoying USB disconnect sound on Windows being triggered and everything. Some player softwares even completely forget that you ever had the DAC selected as the output target when it goes away even just temporarily. That's not great. And so we decided to keep it powered whenever possible while Unison is connected to a powered-up host.

I didn't mean to suggest it was a bad choice, by using :( . Just sad that @docBliny decided to resort to something as inelegant as electrical tape. :D

Wasn't meant as a defense, just an explanation as to why it's done this way.

I would really like to know what the impedance multiplier is doing or whats the circuitry up to here to make the amp think the load is less "demanding"??

@ArmchairPhilosopher

I'm sure he'd love to tell you, but then he'd have to kill you. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah for sure....

Sure would like some insight...ya cant deny the laws of physics.
Like back in my radio days with tuning transmitters, adding caps and inductors to electrically lengthen or shrink the antenna etc.
Maximum power xfer....

Think I have an idea of whats going on here but the source is the source...

ok..

Discovered this stash on Friday!

I have rips of the Analog Productions SACD, the 30th Anniversary SACD, and MoFi Gold CD of DSOTM. I haven't A-B'd them back to back enough to declare an outright winner but I LOVE that Gold CD. In fact, all of Pink Floyd on Gold CD just has a certain addictive heft and punch to the sound quality - those Golds have certainly been instrumental in turning my opinion of PF from a fairly negative view to a pretty healthy one. Took most of my life but I'm finally managing to 'get' Pink Floyd.
PF (and Steppenwolf and ELP) were literally the reason my dad helped me build out a basement bedroom (when I was 12). He helped me build a pair of bass reflex speakers with MR/T being horns and a 12” woofer. Drove them at first with a mono Harman Kardon Tube Integrated Amp. Alas, don’t remember that first turntable. He’d just upgraded to a top of the then line Realistic Receiver and speakers and I got the HK hand me down.

So, still have my brandy-new purchased with paper route money DSOTM LP (and the others, Meddle, and on… I have everything they’ve ever done on LP in multiple pressings in some cases. Never selling. As far as DSOTM goes, best IMO is the MF UHQR.

The older I got, the more I “got” PF… and then came University of Arizona, and then The Wall Live, and, well… yeah, lifetime top 3 rock band (other two are Rush and ELP). Uniquely (again, to me) everything the’ve ever done I appreciate (there are some moments/cuts here and there I could take or leave) everything album is a winner… (Oh well, ummm maybe not ELP Love Beach - but that doesn’t COUNT!)

Art Pepper via Mimir with Loudness at 40%, and gain at -18.1dB. Doin the LIAR thing and loving it.

PS: what do people think of RAM Tubes (Roger Mojeiwski - sp? Heritage)?
