Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

@ArmchairPhilosopher, I'm seeing Forkbeard questions on other forum sites. Much confusion. Mainly, if you don't order a Forkbeard module with a DAC purchase, are the Forkbeard features/software still installed on the DAC? Confusion about Forkbeard running in the background, even without the module? Basically, is it somehow hurting the DACs performance, even if you don't have a module connected?

Don't shot the messenger, just hoping to clear up confusion...! 🤓

If you don't have Forkbeard, Mimir is just a DAC. No bits are harmed in the making of your music.
(Same applies if you do have Forkbeard but set volume to 100%, balance to center, and pEQ mode to flat.)

The FB-enabled features are baked into Mimir's firmware, not the Forkbeard module, but lie dormant without the module.

Ok, I'll throw this request out:

Moved into a new (to us) house, and it has a bar in the basement. I've always been a beer (and some vodka) guy before getting into bourbon a few years ago. I'm a dummy on the rest. So here is the ask:

What is your pick for me to stock for one bottle of each liquor type, in the $20-100 range for each? Only caveat besides bourbon is Absinthe, I have that covered 😜
A couple to mention:

Rye whiskey - I like Old Forester Rye a lot.

Gin - the aforementioned Botanist is excellent and I really love our OSD Dry Gin. It is fabulously fruity and delicious.

That's what I expected. But, there were comments like Forkbeard is some type of A.I. virus, constantly running in the background, taking away processing power of the DAC, and impacting sound quality? Silly, but it's the net, and people like conspiracy theories...!

If permissible, can I quote your answer? Or should I PM you the thread?

Thanks...! 👍

So…

Almost all of our research and development work is done by employees of our company.
You could say that it’s pretty much all done in-house.

Forkbeard started out as a “spec project” by a guy who had no prior working relationship to the company.
Would that mean that it was done … out-house? 😁
That's one to ponder while on the crapper... 🤪

...probably already ninja'd.

Every DAC we ever made has at least one microprocessor in it, Bifrost and up also have a separate DSP. If firmware running on the device would degrade the sound quality in any way, you would have noticed by now.

Ever heard the phrase 'Patience is a VIRTUE'. Waiting for a DAC to achieve optimal operational temps has nothing to do with sound, it is an exercise in discipline and virtue allowing audiophiles to reach a higher metaphysical plane.
Is this how you explain things to Barbie when you keep her waiting?

does powering up a Mimir without an FB module plugged in automatically reset volume to 100% / center balance / pEQ mode to flat? or does the button need to be held down during power-up as well?

Like many, I prefer my steak smoked/reverse-seared on a charcoal grill but I also will happily cook on a cast iron pan. Who cares if I set off the smoke alarm while building a nice, thick crust?

Edit - @golfbravobravo 1. Safe travels 2. Ms. Jody is a wonderful writer. 3. Good luck in your new life on the left coast.
Thanks for that. She is at the moment enjoying her 50th reunion at Pomona with her English class colleagues from 1975.

I shall go and join her for dinner shortly.

Travels so far have been great. Only one incident, in Yuma, caused my good humor to fade. We had to charge and I went to the appropriate charger and all spaces were full. I parked opposite and waited in the 92 degree heat. After about 20 mins a Mustang vacated a spot. I backed in and connected. Noticed that the Merc with CA plates wasn't plugged in at all. I asked her if she had seen me waiting and got an airhead "ah, sorry" and she stayed there. Ms Jody gave me the eye for my very audible comment about $&%&% entitled Californians.

I'm back in the OK books now I think. Tomorrow Northwards!

You have to reset it.
It saves whatever state it was in when you switched it off and doesn't automatically reset itself.
We do it that way to ensure that you don't accidentally blow your speakers and/or ear drums into orbit if you use Mimir as a preamp and don't have the Forkbeard module plugged in for whatever reason when you switch it back on, or if there's an issue with the module and it doesn't get recognized even though it's plugged in.

By the way, those julips were so good I asked the bartender what bourbon he had used. He smiled and said, "Here's an old bartender's secret. The best tasting cheap hooch is Early Times. That's what you have."

Ever since then I've had Early Times in my bar and use it for mixed drinks calling for bourbon.
Try subbing in a small portion of nice, aged rum for a bit of the whiskey.

@Paladin79 Difford’s Guide does a great job breaking recipes out by ingredient.

The El Diablo is another nice Cassis using cocktail.
That Difford's Guide is helpful! I've got a nice bottle of well-made Nocino that is a little too bitter to drink on its own and I found 14 different cocktails using it in that guide. Yay!

I am not cocktail-savvy to say the least.

Simon Difford knows his stuff. It’s British/Euro-centric in terms of products, but those are easy switches.
