Yeah, I think that RS1 sound is more of forward or splashy than harsh. I couldn't remember if dt880 sounded harsh to me but it didn't impress me at all. Dt990 sounded worse than dt880 to me when i listened to them 2 weeks ago.

I just ordered some RS1s from Drew at Moon w/ Black Dragon recable. I think for now my high end can odyssey is done. I have always favored my Grados over all others, but the highest up I have gone are 225 and MS2s.

DT880 wasnt harsh for me either. Actually DT880, especially '03 version is almost perfect headphone technically. The treble spike is still noticeable, giving the sound sharpness which turns some people off. DT880 sound has a sharp sound in treble which I havent heard in any Grado model that I have heard so far. DT990 is way overboard though, its very piercing and sibilant. Grados are also harsh, but in different way. The treble has more prominent splashing sound than slicing sharpness of Beyers. And in RS1 it suits the sound very well. The treble is edgy and splashy, like in Grados generally, but also the midrange and bass are warm and fluid, and the Grado treble gives a nice counter balance to the sound.

Ultimately, I loved these cans, but had to sell because I got tired of the comfort issues. Has anyone tried cpads?

I had beta-Cpads for my SR225 long time ago. Not worth it IMO, changed sound too much. However, the pads have changed a lot since. Now they come in different shapes and have ports which can be used to adjust bass... So perhaps they sound better nowadays.

Haven't visited these forums in over 2 years now. Having gone through a number of different headphones (595,580,600,650,MS1,RS2,880) and selling them the RS-1 is the one I continue to use and not surprisingly found on these forums.

Love them to bits.

Just my little rant.

Combo with Grado RA1, the sound of RS1 improves quite well. The highs is no longer too bright in my ears, it becomes smooth as silk~

I wouldn't say it is the best but it is definitely a fabulous amp with the RS-1's. For me, I'd place it at #2 without having heard every single amp in the world. The EAR HP4 betters it, but I prefer tubes in most cases, SET to boot. Of course, the EAR is 15x the price of the RA-1...

I had an RA-1 but sold it before I purchsed my RS-1's. I used it with my 325i's, a nice combo but when I bought a WA3+ I found what was a better combo for me. The 3+ is, to my ears, warmer with more detail. This is a beautiful match.

Good to see that the RS-1s still get some love in this forum! This thread hasn't been active in ages!

Oh, and +1 for the RS-1 w/ tubes (see sig), but I hear that the RA-1 is pretty sweet too.
