Rockhopper M^3 - The Review
Apr 11, 2009 at 4:21 AM Post #316 of 523
I just got three 8610s in the mail today and my initial impressions on them were quite positive. They sound fantastic with classical music but the brightness isn't helping the vocals. I'd be curious to try 843s if they are any different.

Hi Analog

What did you have before the 8610s?

I had 627/637 combos which I really enjoyed.

Hi analog

What source are you using? It was unclear from your sig.

How does the SE M3 compare with your balanced M3?

I didn't own both at the same time, so I'm not sure. Seem similar to my memory. I'm at a reduced version of my rig at the moment tho, so it's hard to be sure.

I was using my Macbook with ALAC and my Move as a DAC.

Actually it's great to hear they sound similar

I'm also in the "reduced" state so playing around with stuffs at this price point is a good idea.

I'm unfamiliar with the Move, do you have any photos of your rig and any info about the internal DAC chip the Move uses?

Yup, that's the one. Since I'm on the move with my macbook all the time, I'm using it to feed it to my headphones.

IC...

Have you compared the 8610s with the 637/627s enough to draw some conclusions yet?

USG

I have a reason for asking.....

I haven't critically compared the two (627/637 vs. 8610s) but the difference was quite obvious without any extensive comparison.

8610s in both ground and L/R channel resulted in very bright, lively sound. Treble was more extended than the other set up but I felt a hair less presence in the mid.

627 in the ground and 8610s in the L/R channel sounded very similar to the all 8610 set up and I may have to do more comparison to be able to tell the difference.

The original set up which was 627/637 set up had a very all around sound, IMO. It's very warm from top to bottom and has a Sennheiser sound. My main gripe with this set up was it's somewhat laid back high. Compared to my amp One and Move, the highs didn't have the sparkling clarity which 8610s did.

For now, I've put back the 627/637s back because I'm listening to lots of vocal stuff, but I plan to switch to 8610s set up when I get my new classical CDs. I think that's where the 8610s really excel.
