Rockboxing your iPod just to support your flac library ? Why not convert flac to ALAC or WAV ?

To troll is to throw a net to the bottom of the water, in the hopes of catching fish as it drags behind the boat at the bottom. From that definition, I think (I'm no expert on these things, so it could be the other way around for all I know), it's another way to call someone a socially manipulative bottom feeder.
Add to that that trolls, as creatures of some European myths, are usually ugly and mean, and you have a perfect term for this sort of thing.

P.S. it would be a lot cooler if playing D&D in high school actually involved sacrifices to some dark lord. No, you see, it gets you finding and remembering things like this.

My FLAC drives (2x 1TB) are full at the moment and can't wait for the 1.5's to come out, that will give me enough space to consolidate my archived music to 2 drives and leaving room for growth, freeing up the 2x1 TB drive for photos and video. Converting the flacs to mp3 v0 will take me near 1 TB and another 1.5 TB drive will give me room to grow.

All in all, I always manage to max out storage. I figure by the end of 2009 I'll have 10 TB in my server and another few scattered around the house in desktops. Just the way it goes I guess! If they build it...we will fill it

How do you do DVD-A rips?

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. 1.5 Tera is a lot to lose in one fell swoop.
Jason, you have to buy an extra one for backup for each one you use.

Trolls need love too, you know. Also, they need nutrition. But I guess that's not a problem because he can always have an "ogg" sandwich.

HAha, well yeah, lots and lots of music. Over time, CDs and LPs...so easy to just pack up a basement full of tunes. I can't even imagine some of the guys with 10000 lp's and doing needle drops on them, but over time...24/96 drops...they would add up FAST. Anyhow, storage is finally at a point now that things can finally work for me in a small form factor rather than a rack system file server.

Oh so true. I'm crazy paranoid too about this.

So my back up goes like this:

Original RBCD/HDCD or LP shelved in my listening room and used A LOT.
Originals ripped to FLAC and burned immediately to optical media
FLAC is stored on some internal hdds and duplicates stored on external storage on the network
FLAC files are converted to v0 mp3 or aac and stored on internal hdd and stored on an external hdd on the network as well as burned to optical

Every internal hdd upgrade I cycle in the new, transfer files, and store the old hdd in a fireproof safe. The old hdds in the safe get wiped and used in older computers I build and give away.

So online I have 2 copies, offline 2 copies in optical form one lossy one lossless and of course the originals still in tact. Then also offline one copy in a fireproof safe.

OCD? A new disorder is needed to describe this

No, but that works, too.

trawl - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
"2: troll"

Trawl is more specifically that, though, it appears. The troll def appears to including anything pulling a lure or net (like an internet troll
smily_headphones1.gif
).

The Internet: for when you're too lazy to walk 20 feet to a dictionary. Forum software automatically titling your plain URL: for when you are even lazier than that.

JetAudio converts to everything BUT ALAC and WMA PRO. It will convert to WAV and FLAC though - and it's free.

On the subject of the 5.5 Ipod being modded by Vinnie (who is a wonderful person and Head-Fier). I got a new one last year that Vinnie modded for me and I started out getting 12-14 hours of battery life.
Currently, with everyday use, a year later, I am only getting 4-5 hours battery life. Shame on Apple.

Why not convert them to a high-bitrate lossy? You won't notice the difference.

Has a $350 DAP got a DAC & Amplifier worth more than that?

Comparing a codec/encoder (FLAC) against a container (Ogg) is quite lame. Especially when the Ogg container can hold FLAC encoded audio data...

I recommend you read up on the details before commenting.
