Rockboxing your iPod just to support your flac library ? Why not convert flac to ALAC or WAV ?

Flac is a slow loading useless music file format anyway...use ogg

FLAC is already ENCODED

encoding it again mean a loss of DATA surface quality etc.

always find the original source and encode again to the new format.

if you dont have the source WAV or CD just download the wma or mp3.

Like all compressed lossless files, FLAC is identical to the original WAV files and converting it into a different lossless format, or back into WAV, results in zero loss.

If I want to convert a Flac ALBUM, to ALAC. I will load up Foobar2000, and convert the flacs to wav's with a .cue file. Ill then loads the .cue in daemon tools, and hey presto its like having the original cd in your drive again.

Then I just get itunes to rip to ALAC from the virtual cd drive, and it picks up all the cd info from the net automatically.
VV.quick, and much faster than re-ripping.

Zero quality loss too. (Btw, im assuming this process can be easily reversed without any loss using foobar too right?)

You don't need to mount the WAVs to a virtual drive or anything. You can just drag the WAVs into iTunes to be converted to ALAC. Here's what I did way back when I still carried lossless files on my iPod: I converted the FLAC to WMA lossless and then dragged these into iTunes which converts them to ALAC. This way you get to preserve the artist, album etc. tags that were on the FLACs.

I didn't use dBpoweramp to convert my FLACs to ALAC directly because my iPod doesn't seem to like ALAC files created this way (buffer and skipping issues).

This is not true. There is no loss of data using FLAC. It is a slightly smaller file than .wav because it uses a marker system. Something akin to WinZip. When it is converted back for playing or converted back to a wav file, there is no loss in data.
That is why flac and alac are perfect storage substitutes for wav or cda files.

Many people here use flac as a losless archival format, and even to listen to music. I load my rockboxed ipod and cowon D2 with it. Is is fast to decode and works very well, even in DAPs with slow CPU (such as the ipod). If you want a slow decoding format go ape...

Think its from "stroll".

Define stroll: # amble: a leisurely walk (usually in some public place)
# walk leisurely and with no apparent aim

If I'm going to convert to some other Lossless format it will be ALAC, not WMA. I've been trying to figure out my proper workflow and storage and I think I've come up with something:

Each drive = 1.5 TB (released in Oct)

2 drives = FLAC (archival quality: EAC to FLAC)
1 drive = mp3/aac (iTunes directory along with media served up throughout the house)
2 drives = ALAC when needed in the future

Seems a bit much but for now, until I have an incredible desktop rig, I'm pleased with v0 mp3s or the highest quality aac files. If when something better comes along and I need ALAC I'll just dbpoweramp batch convert FLAC to ALAC and add these new files to the iTunes drive. In fact, if I'm on my Mac, I'll just load up the directory in Max and batch convert to ALAC and it will automatically load the music to iTunes. Even better!

Ideally everything would be in FLAC and I would only need 2 drives but that isn't happening any time soon. Rockbox is okay but not outrageously awesome and it won't work on the 160 classic nor the new soon to be released (and hoping 250 or 320) iPods.

I know...seems ridiculous, but needle drops at 24/96 mean lots of space! Not to mention DVD-A rips too. My FLAC drives (2x 1TB) are full at the moment and can't wait for the 1.5's to come out, that will give me enough space to consolidate my archived music to 2 drives and leaving room for growth, freeing up the 2x1 TB drive for photos and video. Converting the flacs to mp3 v0 will take me near 1 TB and another 1.5 TB drive will give me room to grow.

All in all, I always manage to max out storage. I figure by the end of 2009 I'll have 10 TB in my server and another few scattered around the house in desktops. Just the way it goes I guess! If they build it...we will fill it
