Rockboxing your iPod just to support your flac library ? Why not convert flac to ALAC or WAV ?

The way I select the rip process puts the needed info, that tags normally provide, in the file name. That's good enough for me. I generally run about 8GB of files in the WAV format. My main rigs are in my sig and my Apple products, an 8GB iPhone and an 8GB Nano 3G are large enough for the files I use.

dbPoweramp will transcode FLAC/ALAC.
Can't remember if its free, I know there is a fee if you want mp3 (which I don't), but then I found myself using the program quite alot and it only cost me like 30 bucks, and thats real good value considering how much I use it.

Try it out (for free) and see if you like it.

You've got your iTunes settings on default.

Under Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing -> Import Using you can choose which format you want iTunes to convert the incoming WMA files to.

It doesn't allow for WMA playback, but it supports importing WMA to convert to other formats (including Apple Lossless). Which is better than can be said for it's FLAC support.

I supposed that you'd wanted to be able to make use of WMA with iTunes (as opposed to being forced into lossy AAC), but it seems you want it to play natively, so nope, nothing on that.

That was what the OP was talking about, using WMA itself, not converting WMA.

Why take the trouble of transcoding from FLAC to WMA? Since you will need Rockbox either way... (the Apple iPod firmware don't support either FLAC or WMA).

one of the biggest benefits to FLAC is the fact that you don't need to re-rip your collections and that you can always get the original WAV file back (although I don't see why). At this stage, I don't think WMA offers that, at least not that i'm aware of.

You don't need iTunes. Just use dBPoweramp like you do to convert to ALAC and then use "Ephpod" to drag and drop. No iTunes domination!

dBPoweramp is free for the first 30 days and then something like $18 for a year. It's worth 3 Heinekens or packs of cigarettes.
Not only does it convert anything to anything, but you can fix and attach all of your ID3 tagging to your heart's desire.

itunes will convert wma to another format. your ipod hasn't support for wma lossless, wma or anything. unless apple and microsoft decided to hold hands and kiss in the dark.
