I don't know if there are such posts on head-fi. In Russia we have at least two specialists, who make such modifications. One of them currently does it for money. HM-601 rarely break after they've solved the button problem. I voided my warranty support when I first tried Rockbox (the first version) on HM-601.
 
I still doubt that all in one chips can sound better than modified HM-601.

The mods sound interesting. If you could post indeph directions on how to impliment the mod then I may consider undertaking such a feat.

Let's just put it this way, while I consider my ibasso DX100 superior to the Studio V, from a musical enjoyment factor I still don't consider the ibasso a night and day difference from the V. You factor in the portability, long battery life, and ease of use with tactile buttons, I consider the Studio the better portable option. Although the V does have its weak points, hiss being the big one.

I don't think, I have to try it. We have a thread on player.ru forum named "HiFiMAN HM-602 vs HiSoundAudio Studio". Reading it was enough for me. I bought HM-601 once because I wanted a DAP without sound tweaks. And I definitely don't want any tweaks now. In my opinion tweaks make different music sound in similar manner. I don't need this at all.

In my opinion HM-801 with Game amp is a very neutral DAP and it is definitely more neutral than C4 PRO. I seriously doubt that DX100 crashes HM-801. But I will find out myself in a few weeks. In Russia many owners compared HM-801 with C4 PRO (even with modified ones) and ranked HM-801 higher. I compared HM-801 (with Game amp) with a DAP that I rank higher than C4 PRO. It is called Alexmod and uses a delta sigma DAC, and I can't say that HM-801 is less neutral but both of them are considered the most neutral DAPs among the top ones.
 
I personally think that modified HM-601 is less colored than the stock one. But for example even stock 602 still reflects the peculiarities of different tracks better than devices with sound tweaks.

So you'll have an opportunity to listen to a DX100 yourself in a few weeks? Curious to hear your thoughts when you can compare the 2. So far everyone whose made a comparison between the two have found the DX100 superior.

Comparing my Studio V to the 601. The Studio Vs sound stage is much larger, treble is well extended and crystal clear. The mid range and bass are quite neutral. I'd have to say the Studio makes my 601 sound muddy and cluttered in comparison.

So I'm on firmware 0.08 and I'm using a Mac. Does any kind soul want to walk me through this process so I can avoid bricking a device I couldn't afford in the first place?

 
 
These are great instructions: http://www.head-fi.org/t/579759/how-to-installing-and-uninstalling-rockbox-to-the-hifiman-hm-801-603-602-and-601 And while my 601 never completely ignored a file, it didn't see some under "artists" if they were .ogg, but I could get to them by going to SD and browsing that way. Rockbox hasn't had any issues, except for one file that turned out to be corrupt, I just didn't realize it. Once I used my dbPowerAmp converter to unpack the .flac to wav, and then re-compress it, BOOM, worked perfectly.

Try if this also happens with flac files. Flac plays fine on my RockBox'ed 801.

Seems fine (so far) with flac. Forgot to mention that I have no problems with the same ALAC files on a Kingston 32GB class 4 card

Can any of you recommend some software that will let me retag my music before putting it on my HM-601? Some tracks appear with no artist name, or their arranged by album name, or the track listing is all wrong, etc.
 
I'm on a mac BTW.
