RHA - T20 - Impressions, Reviews, and questions
Jun 27, 2015 at 2:32 AM Post #46 of 1,127
Tried out all three filters tonight after using T20 + Reference filters as my sole IEM for the past few days.

After trying all three, I'll be sticking with the Reference filter. I find it to be the best balance between warmth, clarity, and soundstage.

The Bass filter was actually just fine for most music if you prefer a more intimate soundstage and/or want to roll off the treble a bit. However with bass-heavy music, the bass takeover was too much for me. I know some will really like it, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Instead of using it for electronic music as suggested, I could actually see using this filter for acoustic / instrumental music.

The Reference filter as mentioned above, strokes a good balance between warmth, clarity, and soundstage - nice! Perhaps dweaver can interject, but from memory this filter reminded me most of T10 with the Treble filter on but with crisper highs and larger soundstage.

The Treble filter us for you who like to live on the edge because it sure is a bit edgy. Bass is a bit less prominent and upper mids and treble take a leap forward. I found it was a bit shouty, and I'm usually the last guy in the room to say an IEM's shouty. I thought I'd hear a larger soundstage with this filter but was happy that I think I heard a wee bit larger soundstage with the Reference filter.

All that said, I'm sure all three filters will have their advocates! Devoted bassheads will screw on the black Bass filter and never look back, treble heads will head right for that Treble filter, but most people will be more than happy with the Reference filter. This makes me really happy, as after hearing the T10 I was a strong advocate for the Treble filter being the most balanced. Good job making an IEM for the rest of us, RHA :L3000:

T20 Reference Filter FTW!!!

Agree with your observation 100%. I have the treble filter on the T10 and reference on the T20, FTW.

I really must applaud RHA for these filters, they really do work well and it's fun to be able to change a IEM signature in these ways.

Cheers,
K

@Currawong: I got a taste of the hot treble last night when listening to some New Order of al things. The metal I was listening to - nope. New Order - yup.

My 19yo daughter pointed it out when I let her listen. I thought it was because she's a teen with better hearing than me because ice listened to New Order a lot and never thought the treble was hot. Then I took a listen, and there it was.

Put them back on burn-in overnight and will see how they do today...

I've experienced ear fatigue listening to Low Life a few times... don't remember which IEMs I was using. There are some harsh tones in there that can use some dealing down.

Prepping for some comparative listening tomorrow. I used the Decibel 10th app and a jig to volume match the T20 with some IEM I'm interested in comparing them to using a 1k Test Tone on the Shanling M3 DAP on the Low Gain Setting. Here's what I got:

RHA T20 @ volume 16 = 78dB
RHA MA750 @ volume 11 = 78dB
Dunu DN-1000 @ volume 13 = 78dB
TPEOS Altone200 @ volume 12 = 77dB
TPEOS Altone200 @ volume 13 = 79dB

As you can see, the T20 are a wee bit harder to drive than the competition.

For reference, the Shanling has 60 volume steps.

see how a crowd favorite (ma750) fairs with their new flagship

and the dn1000 comparison well..... i just wanna read!

Nice! How did you couple the IEM to the microphone?
You may want to try also with Pink Noise. Single frequency may not represent average loudness, as the IEM might be peaking or dipping at that certain frequency. As we know all IEM has different FR.

I affixed it with tape, wrapping the tape around the straw. It was pretty secure.

I'll give pink noise a try. I did find that I needed to adjust the volume up or down a click to match volume by ear, but the initial matching at 1kHz got me close.

And one of these days, I might just pick up a dedicated SPL meter

Sorry OOT.
You may want to consider Dayton Audio IMM-6 calibrated microphone for smartphones:
http://www.daytonaudio.com/index.php/imm-6-idevice-calibrated-measurement-microphone.html

It has calibration file that compatible with some apps. With app, it gives you more application, like spectrum analyzer etc that you don't get from an SPL meter, and you can easily screen capture the result. I bought it for less than $18 from Amazon. Small enough to be carried around in pocket.

Sounds like a good deal. Might just have to use some Amazon points on that

Thanks for the tip!

Morning guys - been a little while since we checked in and wanted to say thanks for everyone's comments so far! We're incredibly pleased the T20 is going down so well - hopefully everyone else who gets a listen in the coming weeks will be the same as these early impressions.

More news about pre-sale and on sale date coming very soon!

Thanks again for the chance to give the T20 a listen!

For you RHA MA750 fans out there, I see the T20 as a very clear upgrade. And for those of you who tried the T10 and like the ergonomics but found the bass a bit much, you'll really enjoy these! I'll try to get my review up this week.

Cotnijoe should be getting the North American pair today :L3000:

I have not heard the MA750 so can't comment but 100% agree with nmatheis about his comments regarding the T20 and the T10. I am also hoping to finish up my review this week.
