Depends on your perspective. Obsolete as in no firmware updates will ever be released, and a newer model available? Yes. Obsolete as in no longer a capable device? No. It won't go above 24/96 via USB which is somewhat limiting, other than that it's a fairly modern device.

Do these devices have buttons to switch between RCA output and front headphone output or does connecting headphones silences the RCA output?

  Is that the norm now in these types of devices?

 
 
Not sure if there really is a "norm", everyone does it different. Some are like the D100, others have a sensor so line-out gets muted when headphones are plugged in, and others have buttons/switches to select which is active.
