REVIEW - Yulong Audio Sabre DA8 Reference DAC

Perhaps some clarification from those "in the know" because the specs do seem to indicate that the DA8 will play DSD256 and DSD512:

I was able to play PCM upsampled to DSD512. It was not good, but it played. If it was not able to play DSD512 it would no play it at all.

On the Mytek I can read, on display, HDSD when I'm playing DSD128.
When you/we play a DSD on the Yulong you/we can only read "DSD" (not DSD64, DSD128, etc..) You/we don't know what type of DSD file the DA8 are trying to play.

How did you measure this, with a kill-a-watt wall socket measurer? The da8 has a 30w toroidal transformer (hence the power rating) I think so it's a bit difficult for it to use 3x that much...

edit: its possible i suppose, if the unit is drawing all 30W output and the transformer has 30% efficiency

Is the Yulong DA8 able to upsample PCM to DSD256 or DSD512 in foobar2000?

The foo_dsd_asio proxy is able to upsample PCM to DSD256 and DSD512 but you will need a reasonably powerful computer. My computer has a Core I7 processor and is able to upsample to these rates without hitting 100% CPU use, however I got bad results with DSD256 and DSD512.
My DA8 has a faulty DSD switch (I am shipping it back for replacement). May be the bad results were caused by this faulty switch.
This switch is a circuit inside the DAC. A noise like a white noise appears wandering from left to right channel when the DAC is very hot. A similar noise appeared when playing DSD512 even when the DAC was cold.

hmm could you tell me a bit more about how you got it to upsample to dsd256 and dsd512? i set the pcm to dsd mode in foo_dsd_asio to the first in the list, but if i choose anything higher than dsd128, it would throw a playback error when i try to play anything. thanks!

Set the foo_dsd_asio proxy this way:
 
ASIO Driver: ASIO YULONG Audio 384K DSD DAC
DSD Playback Method: ASIO Native
PCM to DSD Method: SDM Type A (or any other SDM Type)
Fs: DSD256 or DSD512
DSD/PCM Transition: 0 ms (I did not try any other setting)
 
I noticed that with the new "JRiver NEW asio" driver it is working better with DSD256 and DSD512.
With DSD512 I still get a strange noise on the right channel.

i see, my dsd playback method was on DoP instead of ASIO native. dsd256 and dsd512 work now. however i have the same strange noise on the right channel with dsd512. it might be a driver/software issue, or issue in general with da8s (i hope not). would help if other owners could report their findings.
 
ps my da8 is otherwise in perfect working order. USB input, win7 pro 64-bit

The sound is different with DSD512 because the artifacts I am getting with my unit. This may be a clue that the DSD sampling frequency is really that of the proxy setting.
With DSD256 I am still getting faint clicks on the right channel. I got no artifacts with DSD64 or DSD128.

  just tried pcm->dsd256 with a bunch of quiet tracks again, no clicks or noises of any kind. dsd512 though, very significant noise/artifacts
 
also am i crazy or does pcm converted to dsd sounds better or at least different from bit-perfect pcm?

I am trying that out now.  Seems to sound pretty good to me.

thank you for trying it out! are you using the same software to do the conversion, ie foobar2k? if not then it could be a foobar conversion issue, as i have not tried jriver. also you are converting to dsd512, and there is no audible problems?
