great review driftwood. i've been wondering about those phones for a while now.

The driver unit contains a volume dial and two LEDs which indicate power and if they are getting adequate voltage (it is red when warming up, or when batteries are low, and green otherwise).

you know, i really flurking hate this. there are millions of people with red/green color blindness, and yet companies continue to do stupid **** like this. get a clue, morons.

this is true, I can see how this would be an issue. Blue LEDs also look cool, and they are definately under-utilized. Are they more expensive? Anyway, I don't really think it would be a huge problem though, because whereas the on the SHA-1 there is one indicator that changes from red to green, on the SRM-001 there are actually two indicators. the one closer to the headphone jack is red, the one closer to the volume knob is green. As long as you know which is which, it doesn't really matter what color they are.

But I agree, red/green colorblindness is largely not taken into consideration with a lot of product designs.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, red and green LEDs are better than amber though... those are just plain ugly in my opinion.

Being discontinued? Are we talking about the old SR-001, or the newer version SR-001 MK2? Stax's homepage don't say anything about discontinuing them, both the English and Japanese version of the site....

well, in the interest of satisfying your desires, I would be the willing recipient of anyone who wanted to send (give) me an ER-4P for comparison purposes.

I'll even take the ER-4S if it comes down to it. See how nice I am?

I think by and large Rick owes HeadFi more than he gives in terms of reviews and comparrisons. It seems unjust that he should chime in to each new pair he ads to his collection without going on for many posts about it as others of us often do.

Rick, kindly compare the SR-001 Mk II in full detail to the Omega II. Note that you will be graded for completeness by comparrison to Darthnutt's original Omega II review.

I fully expect that we should see comments like, "Compared to the Omega II, I had difficulty determining the exact dimensions of the furniture present in the recording studio with the SR-001. Before owning the Omega II, I had convinced myself that all studios used the same furniture due to their common resonance characteristics. In this regard, I find the SR-001 to be preferable for recordings made in the 70s due to the utter lack of fashion sense and use of reflective vinyls that color the minimally miked presentation in a negative way. The SR-001 is simply more forgiving in this respect."

The previous entry was made in 2002. I am certainly the late comer to this portable stax party. Please bear with me.

I started my stax career with a SRX Mk3. Loved it so much, I ebayed another set (SR44) the other week, not as good as SRX, but still offered excellent sound for money.. Then, I saw these SR001/Mk 2 and SR002 sets. Which one to buy was my question. Instead of waiting for advice, the easier and more efficient way was to buy than all, and left others no time and chance to take them, or any one of them away.

Since then, I have been listening to both and tried different combination, playing 002 with 001 driver, or vice versa. In short, I consider the sound difference between 001/Mk2 set and 002 set is not that much as suggested by their names. Bear in mind that 001/Mk2 uses a 1.5 micron thick diaphragm, 002 uses 1.35, when they are played using 002 driver, 001/mk2 sounds more like old electrett headphones (e.g. pioneer se 500 type with just adequate bass. yes, bass was there, but not punchy). 002 sounds more balance and rich with that little more bass. Then, when they are played under 001 driver.. OMG, 002 sounds so much like my 507 on 006t. Everything improved. 001/mk2 also sounds better using 001 driver. A mix and match suits me better.

I suspect that when Stax updated the 001/Mk2, their main considerations are power consumption and portability. These are also the two areas when more noted improvement can be felt. I am solving the power consumption problem by using a 5v/1a power bank and the charging cable of my old psp. not 100% sure how that additional 1v power input makes the difference. I subjectively feel that using power bank gives better sound than using 14500 battery (3.2v), which is way better than using rechargeable batteries (1.2v x2).

My portable stax journey is still on going. I bidded a pair of broken sr003. The reason for making the purchase is to get a stax cable cheap. Many of you might not aware, the cable of 001/mk2/002/003/005 are interchangeable. With a cable from a 003, I can play my 001/mk2 and 002 on my 006t. it will be interesting to see how they compare to their big brothers.
