It depends on the HP. I think that a good rule of thumb is to try it and set it to what sounds good to you.

Who is that in response to?

Sorry I'm on my phone and it did not want to quote multiple people. It is with regard to the gain setting and volume discussion.

Thought so, just checking. In response though, what I'm trying to ascertain is whether there is a trade off or not with the the gain. I just want to wrap my head around the science.

Regarding the scroll wheel, can somebody compare it to the Fiio X5ii. which one is better?

I've had two X5ii and two QP1R. There is no comparison.

The X5ii and the X3ii are soo much better. That is why I sold the two QP1R's and now have a X7. Might not sound quite as good, but at least you can select what you want using the wheel. I'm not prepared to spend nearly £800 and have to use the buttons because no-one at Questyle seemed to test the wheel.

I know I'm going to get a slagging, but for such a good DAP, the wheel is inexcusable

Maybe.  As in:  You don't have the unit anymore.  So what's with wheel obsession?
On another note, the X5I's wheel's texture feels a bit better, granted.  But, I also remember many complaints that the wheel didn't scroll very well.  As for the QP, I don't know how responsive the wheel is: someone else can answer that.
But, returning to slagging.  Honestly, why are you here?  Move on, you don't have one anymore.

1. The wheel is really bad for a DAP of the quality (and price) of the QP1R.
2. I got absolutely no problems in changing settings, choosing music and, that's about it, listen (always with the wheel, never use the buttons)

"But, returning to slagging.  Honestly, why are you here?  Move on, you don't have one anymore."

I read today on Questyle's Facebook page that the newer units have revised wheels and that's why I am here, because I asked that question earlier on today. If it turns out to be the case, I was thinking about getting another one.
Personally, I think this is a super useful forum for anyone who has a QP1R (so I can moan about the file management ;)) or anyone who doesn't have one (researching before buying one or giving feedback and user experience after having sold one ;)). I read this forum before taking the plunge and buying the QP1R and I have no regrets (that's a good thing because, as it turns out, i couldn't return it even if I wanted to as the retailer I bought it from only did exchanges and not refunds :o).

Regarding the wheel, my thoughts are that if you're going to release something as a feature (the wheel is a prominent feature, just like the volume knob - which is awesome, btw), then it should work. This isn't a cheap prototype DAP. It's pretty top of the line. You wouldn't buy a car and expect that the steering wheel might *sometimes* turn the car. Now I know that Questyle acknowledge the issue with the wheel and have done a great job giving out stickers and including them with new models. And if subsequent units have a fixed / improved wheel, then that's great (I wish I had me one of those ;)). But to say that the buttons work so you can just ignore the wheel and use them instead is just promoting sloppy design. And I can't imagine Questyle would ever be happy with that.

I came from the Sony ZX2, that quite frankly trounces the QP1R when it comes to usability, ergonomics, UI, battery life, stability, hardware buttons, file management... pretty much everywhere except the one area the counts... Sound quality.

The way I see it, the QP1R has a lot of failings (relatively speaking, compared to other TOTL DAPs) but the sound quality is spectacular and more than makes up for it.

Completely agree! But I'm eagerly awaiting a firmware update to refresh the file management system ;)

I'll buy that.  But, the wheel is so well known.  And frankly, I was interested in what's inside the unit. No one can build a wheel like Apple, but, I'd rather have excellent sound than slick perfect design on the unimportant outside.
I get so sick of hearing about eye-candy and how pretty something looks on a forum dealing with SOUND.  I give cudos to Questyle for building in reactive feedback when a button is activated.  That's something the FiiO didn't think of.
So maybe I get a little tired of whining over piddly thingswhen it's hard enough to find an even half-assed dap with accessability.  All I hear is "Why was Questyle so stupid as not to go touchscreen?  My wheel feels funny so I'm going to drive people crazy on the thread."  etc.etc.
I've bought and love everything about this DAP.  So maybe it's time I leave the thread...and block DC.

Well said.  And don't forget that Sony is a world corporation with hundreds of engineers and sidemen, and Questyle is a vision of one man with an idea to get out-of-the-ballpark sound that beats or ranks many other DAPs.

It's all a case of perspective I guess.

I'd rather have a device that is a bit clunky to use and sings like an angel, than a device that is a dream to use but sounds average.

95% of the time my QP1R is in my pocket or by my side and out of my sight. I can put up with the minor inconveniences for the other 5%
