[Review] Philips SHL3300 "DJ" Headphones - Most Underrated Headphone?
Jan 11, 2019 at 10:49 AM Post #376 of 458
These have been popping up at all the local Ross stores in my area (DFW, TX) for $17. When I bought them, the headband and earpads were already shedding their pleather coating. I replaced the earpads with some big chonkers I had laying around and just rubbed the shedding pleather off the headband. They lasted a month before the cable disintegrated right below the headphone jack. While they were alive, they sounded great and were my go-to headphone. I'm hesitant to buy another pair after how quickly the cable rotted through and knowing how much of a pain it is to get inside the earcups and having to glue them back together if you want to fix or mod anything.

Those are defects of all of the 3300.

If you get another set, you’ll need to replace the cable. Or just install a female jack and then you can use any cable you want.

I made a How2 that shows exactly what to do, so the process is easy and straightforward.

Besides death and taxes, the only other certainty in life is that SHL-3300s cables will crumble after a while. It's a shame that such great sounding and affordable headphones are plagued with this defect that will invariably turn them into paperweight. I would gladly pay a few dollars for a better quality insulating material that doesn't disintegrate. If you don't intend to mod them and make the cable detachable, there's no point in getting another pair, because it will happen again.

1. Like most I installed Brainwavz HM5 pads. Big improvement in sound. Even if you feel like the stock pads are "just fine", be aware that while the pad swap improves the comfort factor by 200%, it also improves the sound by an unbelievable amount. Do yourself a favor and change the stock pads. If you are on an uber-budget, you can get good quality "generic" round pads for $10 from ebay/aliexpress. I have HM5s on one of my SHL3300 sets, and generic round pads on another. If you do get generic round pads, the size you want is 90mm round (stretch to fit), 95mm round (perfect fit), and 100mm round (pretty loose fit but still works as long as pads have a wide lip on the back). You also want to make sure the generic round pads are 30mm thick (the same thickness as HM5 pads). You are cheating yourself out of the true capabilities of these headphones by using the junk stock pads.

Hello, I have the same headset and I read your post here. I became interested in Brainwavz earpads. I've been looking for amazon.com for them.
I found 2 models in amazon
Do they fit? perfectly?

Thanks for sharing your experience!

The stock pads are 100mm. So any 95mm or 100mm round par will work.

And yes, the HM5 pads fit perfectly. Lots of us use them on our 3300. That includes HM5 variations, such as the Senitek fabric pads.

Here’s what the HM5 look like on the 3300:

I installed the Brainwavz HM5 pads and say that it really changes the audio. The soundstage has improved a lot and as Slater said ... I completely ditched the plastic grilles. The Erpdas are very comfortable and are perfect for SHL 3300.
Thanks.

Glad you like the mods!

The 3300 is getting old enough now, that I’d be willing to bet pretty much 75% of the stock fixed cables have crumbled apart.

As time goes on, the only way to preserve this great budget headphone is going to have to be modding them - removable jack or new cable, new ear pads, repair or recover the paper thin stock headband...

Hi

Yes, the cable was almost broken.
I forgot to say that I also did the cable customization. I bought a removable cable.
I did it myself, I installed a female jack and bought a new cable. It's very good idea.

headband I covered with a cloth. Because was peeling.

That looks great. I like the red cable, and and the headband fabric looks like it could have come like that stock.

Nice job friend

Excellent job @bryanswy, that looks very professional. Could either you or @Slater tell me exactly what 3.5mm jack did you buy, and where? I found several ads of female jacks on ebay!, but I'm unsure which one of them fits the housing inside the SHL3300 drivers. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I think I found it, is this one?: https://www.ebay.com/itm/20PCS-1-8-...67603&_trksid=p2060778.c100290.m3507#shpCntId

Same quantity advertised (20 pieces) and the dimensions are exactly the same as you described (14.2mm L x 11.5mm W x 6.3mm H)

Yup, that’s the one.

Thanks mate, i have just ordered it. Believe it or not, there was a discount coupon available for payment with PayPal, whose value was exactly the same as the price of the item, in this case, $3.49. As free shipping was the only option available, I literally got 20 3.5mm jacks for free lol!
