Haha.  That lame Xbox DRM definitely messes with my glorious sound-stage.

Anyone knows this? Are they ok with a good amp? :)

I tried a cmoy (opa2227), sounded great!  The bass response improved slightly and the mids came out more, a little colder sounding though.
This was coming from a Xonar DG sound card.  I have a musiland monitor 02 coming in by the end of the week, sadly I returned my MA900.

For those of you in the United States, you can get the MDR-MA900 at adorama.com for $199 (with no tax for most) with free shipping + 1 year extended warranty for another $8.
$208 for headphones + 1 year extended warranty.  The best part is they are an authorized sony retailer!
I can definitely feel more confident about the questionable build quality with that kind of coverage.

I'm awaiting for mine to arrive.  Thank you OP for bringing these headphones out to the forefront.

Adorama, Beach Camera (Buydig), and Sonic Electronix are great sites to get headphones from.

Just took possession of my AD900x a couple hours ago and I've got to tell you so far I'm impressed even without a proper listen. Thinking they might well prove to be "it" for me for awhile. Haven't yet had the chance to give them a listen from my usual source chain, so I'm awaiting that reveal. Got to say I'm not as taken with the look as I'd expected... and this from a person that thinks the AD700 is pretty darn cool looking. If I were more adventuresome, I might contemplate a transplant, but that's not going to happen. Not that adventuresome and not that put off by the look.

Updated the original post with AD1000X impressions!

Rather stupidly I forgot to reserve extra posts when I made this thread, so you'll find the AD1000X review at the bottom of the first post.

Excellent review, thanks.
Btw, I find the AD2000x to be in improved version of the AD2000, and probably your next logical step, if you decide to continue on with the comparisons. I always enjoyed my original AD2000 but find the AD2000x to be an improvement, for one, I haven't yet noticed the graininess that you describe and I do remember on some tracks with the original.

To bad I skipped the AD1000x myself, but from your description it does sound close to what I hear with the AD2000x, and so on that note it may not be a good idea to spend the extra money on it as I don't think the improvement will be that great going from one to the other.

Thanks again for the reviews.

Yes every description I read of the AD2000X makes me think that it's relatively similar to the AD1000X. I suspect that the difference in sound really comes down to the earpads as these things often do, which kind of seems crazy given the price difference. I don't plan on getting an AD2000X for that reason but maybe an opportunity will present itself at some point.

There's one in the FS forums for $485 shipped.

Go go go!

EDIT: Oops, CONUS only.

Lol I can essentially get that price from Amazon JP. Actually unlike the AD1000X the local distributor for AT here sells the AD2000X. The retail price appears to be $799.

So I got my Hifiman He-300 today.. thought you'd like to see it compard to the ma900.  Initial impressions are that the ma900 has slightly better bass, but hifiman has better stereo imaging.  They sound pretty similar actually.  Ma900 are way more comfortable obviously but hifiman look more pro with the silver dual entry detachable cable and heavy duty-ish construction.  he-300 are not burned in yet.

That's cool! I've always been curious about the HE-300 since I never really see them get mentioned much. How long have you had your MA900? :3
