The Congos - Heart of the Congos

Produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry who has been mentioned earlier in the thread. Highly recommended.

Great double album remastered from the original black ark quarter inch master tapes (Teac 4 track) it's a pretty awful recording as time wasn't kind to the original tapes tons of tape drop outs can be heard resulting in momentary losses of high frequency... this IMO adds to the character of the recording.

Another few artists to look out for are:

Tetrack
Augustus Pablo
Burning spear
King Tubby
Ijahman
Peter tosh

For white reggae UB40 mustn't be overlooked

I've just asked some Jamaican friends who are hanging out at my place today for their recommendations. Here's a brief summary:

Category A - The singers:

Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown (hey, at least I knew those)
Coco T
Barrington Levy
Anthony Cruize
Richie Stephens
Bushman
Sanchez
Wayne Wonder
Warrior King (similar to Bob Marley)

Category B - The hardcore, thump, thump, oogie boogie type of reggae sung by tough boys who wear big chains on their necks. Most of the lyrics cannot be understood by non-Jamaicans, and some it gets pretty rude, but it's fun club music:

Sizler (DJ style)
Buju Bonton (DJ style)
Wayne Marshall (he can sing, but tough stuff)
Bounty Killa (the master of ********)
Elephant Man
Beenie Man

Vibes Cortel (famous for "take buddy gal! you tink me easy? woo yo a ramp wid?")

Capelton the Fireman (he wants to do things like burn the Queen and chi chi mon, so tread lightly on this recommendation)

And did you get a reply?

No, pinky, not servants, just friends. My last post summarized their recommendations. I've taught them about jazz and blues, and they help me with reggae.

I also showed one young lady what she is doing to her hearing by my taking my Rat Shack SPL meter out to her car. Her normal listening level is about 110 dB, and now she seems concerned.

Hey PinkFloyd, I agree with your take on the heart of the congos. The quality of that recording makes it unlistenable as far as I'm concerned!

I gotta say too that I don't support Capleton. What an A**hole that guy is. He should get off his high horse. I saw him in Boston in 95 on I think the last Sunspash tour. He's a pretty boring performer as well as an off puttingly conservative guy. He basicaly stood at the edge of the stage in his Marcus Garvey regalia with one foot on the monitor, yelling into the mike. Yawn.

But I can second the recommendation of

Half Pint
Beres
Bushman
Bounty Killa
Cocoa Tea
Buju

All quality.

Respect.

Sorry, Bundee, I missed this request (however long ago that was). I did some checking and it seems like this album would be a great round up of his work

http://music.onino.co.uk/music/original_dj_1.html

It' called "Original DJ: U-Roy" and it was just re-released in March of this year.

If you're a vinyl guy, then "A Dread in Babylon" is a great one to own.
