Hey, i need some ideas for headphones that are under $150. I was thinking of buying a pair of Audio Technica ath-ad700s but i thought it cant hurt to get a second opion

He uses an ipod nano as a source, listen mostly to rap music. active noise cancelling doesnt matter, isolation doesnt matter. he doesnt have an amp but could prob pick up a fiio e5. the music quality ranges from 192 - 320 i think.

The jvcs are out of the question because it would take too long to ship and i need them by friday. and i cant get it used cuz its a gift

so any ideas guys?

Just so you know the AD700s have really no bass presence so I don't think they would a be a good choice for an individual who listens to rap. Depending on whether or not you think your friend would like either tight bass or boomy bass you have some choices. There's the Audio-Technica ATH-M50, ATH-A700 or ES7. If you go for the ES7 be sure to buy from a reputable dealer as there are many a fake on ebay. Also the DENON AH-D1001K. All of these are sealed cans unlike the AD700s you were looking at. If you prefer an open pair I suppose a Grado SR80 or 80i might work.

Check each one out and see which is best suited for your friend. Any of these could be shipped quickly from Amazon.

My standard gift is usually the Grado SR-60. Everyone I've given them to loves them. Not just the standard "thank you" upon opening, they almost always come back a couple weeks later to tell me that they have never heard anything so good. Then they want to know how I found out about them, since they'd never heard of Grado.

Open phones that do rap music or bass-intense music well are beyond the reach of budget portable setups.

I have a Denon AH-D1001, and it sounds great without an amp. The bass quantity is great for the price, and the quality is better than most in your price range.

If amazon.com can't ship it in your time frame (make sure it is from amazon.com or at least fulfilled by amazon.com, otherwise shipping in a tight schedule might be pricey and unpredictable), check with head-fi sponsor Headroom ( HeadRoom: The World's Best Headphone Audio Store )

I am with Uncle erik on this one. SR-60 all the way. If you want to spend a little more than that, the SR-80 is certainly a step up IMO.

Nope, the standard pizza box all the way up to the PS1000s.

Does he like bass?

If so, the the A7/900s are probably better for rap exclusively.

o he loves the bass, but the a7/900 are kinda out of budget, for some reason the a700 on amazon looks different then other places and are like 100 bux as compared to 200

Though I've never heard any personally, there is a thread discussing how great the Yamaha RH5MA headphones are. They are closed and seem to have plenty of bass and from whats being said they also seem to be well balanced overall. Great prices on them too, check ebay!

It's just a stock photo. They are black with sparkles in real life. $100 is a decent price for them.
