thx for the responses, iems are a nono, he hates them. leaning toward the grado s60 and denon d1001, gona go to the store to check them out, as for ultrastones and byerdynamics they go way over budget once they arrive here at canada, such a shame.

If you have $150 to spend, you could get the Grado SR 125s. They don't get much love on this forum, but they are well regarded elsewhere. You can't go wrong buying someone a Stereophile Budget Component of the Year and Accessory of the Year, in my opinion. I listen to hip hop on them all the time. If someone had given them to me as a present it would have been a gift I never forgot.

Good choice, man. The big differences between the 60s and 80s are the type of earpads and the size of the plug. I prefer the convenience of the small plug and I even use the 60 pads on my SR225s.
