Preferably Asian, not dubbed, any genre except for horror and perhaps less known mainstream films as I've seen quite a few of the big name popular titles.

My personal favorites over the years have been:
Bin-jip (2004) (3-Iron)
Lilja 4-ever (2002)
Kiraware Matsuko no isshô (2006) (Memories of Matsuko)
Oldboy (2003)
Janghwa, Hongryeon (2003) (A Tale of Two Sisters)
Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo (2004) (Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War)
Samaria (2004)
Linda Linda Linda (2005)
Tennen kokekkô (2007) (A Gentle Breeze in the Village)
Ploy (2007)

Seen it, very good movie though, I consider that to be Jet Li's only good movie lol. That and Ip Man (2008) are probably my favorite martial arts movies.

A member recently asked me to come up with a greatest films list. This isn't absolute as it was curtailed a bit for him, but a foreign language sub-set is:

1952 IKIRU by KUROSAWA (Japan)
1953 TOKYO STORY by OZU (Japan)
1959 HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR by RESNAIS (France/Japan)
1962 L'ECLISSE by ANTONIONI (Italy)
1964 UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG by DEMY (France)
1964 WOMAN IN THE DUNES by TESHIGAHARA (Japan)
1973 SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE by ERICE (Spain)
1987 WINGS OF DESIRE by WENDERS (Germany)
2000 IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE and 2004 2046 by KAR-WAI (China-HK)
2005 THREE TIMES by HSIAO-HSIEN (Taiwan)
2007 DIVING BELL AND BUTTERFLY by SCHNABEL (American director and co-financed, but in French)

If you include foreign which isn't foreign language, add the British/American 1949 THE 3RD MAN by REED and if a German directed first "Hollywood" silent film counts add 1927 SUNRISE by MURNAU.

Check out this beautiful Scorsese commentary on L'eclisse...

ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Seems like you like alot of Korean movies.
Here are some of my favorites:

Gongdong gyeongbi guyeok JSA (2000)
Chingoo (2001)
Dalkomhan insaeng (2005)
Tajja (2006)
Gwoemul (2006)

I really liked Old Boy too...

EDIT: Oh.. I just noticed that you were not looking for mainstream movies... above movies ARE mainstream films but if you haven't watched any of it, I highly recommend. Also, Gwoemul is kind of horror I guess...

And just went out of print on Criterion DVD (and Blu-Ray development stopped) over licensing issues. Pick up while you can.

Many have lamented the fall of American independent filmmaking over the last couple decades (becoming mostly simply edgier commercial genre flicks). Thankfully foreign cinema has kept cinema afloat. Werner Herzog (a bunch of his films are free to stream at the moment - and certainly well worth your time) once yelled at me (when I asked him about recommending other filmmakers) to not watch American films for ten years and focus solely on Iran and China for awhile.

The Middle East and Asia generally certainly are fertile beds right now.

There's not a more satisfying experience than watching Fizcarldo followed by its documentary, Burden of Dreams . Both the film and its making are epic (in the truest sense of the word) films.

Anything directed by Hiroyuki Tanaka/SABU with Shinichi Tsutsumi in the lead.
