Utada Hikaru should be on this list too.

Utada is about as mainstream as they come. You might want to read the OP's original post again:

I don't want the mainstream crap, I want the really experimental and creative stuff like Shiina Ringo and Sigh. Yeah, go ahead and shoot.

many of the suggestions offered to you are strongly opposite experimental and creative, and Shina Ringo makes a type of commercial pop music marketed as avant-garde. some of my suggestions are:

Toshi Ichiyanagi and his counterparts on compilations like 'Obscure Tape Music of Japan'
J.A. Seazer
Les Rallizes Denudes
Hiroyuki Usui
S.K.V.
Kan Mikami
Inu
Lost Aaraaff
Hanatarashi

XXII,

Thanks for that link. I'm a HUGE Aikawa Nanase fan. Great interview of Friedman.

Just heard a song from Marty Friedman's Tokyo Jukebox album that is pretty cool. It's an album entirely of jpop/jrock covers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE5zhVPOcZA

May have already been mentioned, and I'm not sure if he counts as mainstream, but I'm a huge fan of Susumu Hirasawa.
