I have noticed that in my music collection, there are hardly any female singers, except a few MP3s of Anne Lennox.

So to convince myself that I'm not a sexist when it comes to music I need recommendation for some great female Jazz vocalists... How is Diana Krall btw?

Here is a list recently compiled by a NY radio station. While there will be disagreement over ranking you cant go wrong with any of the women listed. I have really enjoyed #17 Cassandra Wilson lately. To answer your question Dianna Krall would also be a great choice.

A couple of others that come to mind are:

Jacintha
Holly Cole
Vanessa Rubin

Yes, Kandra Shank's "Afterglow" is very special, with an outstanding recording job done by MapleShades. Surprisingly her later recordings were not the same.

I like the earlier works of Diana Krall, the ones recorded with a small ensemble (vs with the large orchestra), try her "Love Scenes" and "All for you". Cassandra Wilson's "New Moon Daughter" and "Blue Light Til Dawn" are excellent. A new artist Jacqui Naylor has also recorded some good work in "Shelter".

My favorite is Patricia Barber, her live recording "Companion" is very well done, and "Nightclub", "Cafe Blue", "Verse", "Modern Cool" are all excellent works.

I think she is pretty good, but that would be my biggest understatement of the year

Just another Patricia Barber recommendation!

Companion just came out on SACD.

Her red book "Companion" has always been one of my favorite live recordings. The sound imaging is so good that with the proper audio equipment the whole ensemble plus audience is brought into the living room. I also like how she plays the Hammond B-3.

Can't wait to get the SACD version! Thanks.

The XRCD version of "Companion" is excellent as well. I can't imagine that the SACD will be must better.
