I find Diana Krall overrated. Her voice is weak, and I don't find her music terribly exciting... what's up with her ?

If you want to hear some real jazz vocal, check out Sarah Vaughan's "Crazy and Mixed Up".

And by the way, your list should also have Mahalia Jackson near the top.

Apart from the ladies already mentioned - how about:

Tierney Sutton (especially Unsung Heroes)
Stacey Kent (ok - a bit shallow but nice voice anyway)
Rebekka Bakken (especially her recording with the Julia Huelsmann Trio: Scattering Poems)
Rigmor Gustafsson (I will wait for you)
Silje Nergaard
Shirley Horn
Dee Dee Bridgewater

Or from the olden days:

Jeri Southern
Blossom Dearie
Peggy Lee
June Christy
Rosemary Clooney
Irene Kral
Lena Horne
Carmen McRae

It's amazing how many there are - and there's so much more one could mention...

I bought Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue recently, I found some it very *different* to listen to, its very love or hate, and at the moment I don't know exactly how I feel about it. Definitely some very intellectual stuff. I know I can't listen to it without somebody coming up to me and going "what the hell is that?"

For me on a listening perspective, its a whole different experience.

has anyone heard of jaqnui taylor?

am thinking of plonking some money down to start another foray into jazz. i have heard norah jones and diana krall and i really like their sort of slow mellow sound.

taking that into account, what are the chances of my liking jaqnui taylor?

I've submitted her URL about 5 times now but here it goes again

Her name is Jacqui Naylor (not Taylor), in this link you can sample her voice, she is currently one of my favorite female voices, and I like Diana Krall a lot too.

Her yellow CD is the one I've listened to the most and I have heard it really more than a hundred times easily, by now probably close to 200. Besides, I saw her singing live in New Orleans. Her voice for me is just wonderful. Now because of liking Norah or D.K. is hard to tell whether you'll like some other Jazz singer. Jacqui's yellow CD has many classics re-rendered by her voice, which sounds a bit like Billie Holiday. Her version of "In the wee small hours" I prefer to Sinatra's, which is supposed to be *the* version. Jacqui's version of "I cover the waterfront" is also incredibly moving and beautiful for me, and "Something cool" has a very strange sensuality. Her latest CD is the blue one, and I like a lot "Miss you" and "Climb Higher". But that Cd is very different from the yellow one. The red I really haven't had a chance to listen to enough times. Hope it helps.

Edit: more comments in amazon, mine is one of the spotlight reviews btw:

Perhaps not a jazz vocalist per se, but you might want to check out Ute Lemper's album, Punishing Kiss.

She sings songs by such song-writing luminaries as Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, &c.
