Does the six wires go all the way down to the jack? What do you connect the third (black) wire to on a 4-pin XLR? To the Sleeve of the XLR connector?

The black wire is physical ground. In a 3 pin XLR goes to pin 1 but in a 4 pin single connector you don't have the ground pin since you are using 2 pins for the positive (one per channel) and 2 for the nevative (one per channel) so most likely you will connect the ground to the sleeve to make the ground.

Has anyone had your T1's rewired with connectors to use detachable cables? I am thinking of getting Audese LCD2 and sharing detachable cables. What would be the downside, if any?

The extra soldered joints and the connectors. I don't know it will be audible but it can increease resistance. When I hardwire my HE-6 they acutally improved in sound and gain about 1 db in sound.

I was going to do that for my T1 but Robert at AphroditeCU29 talked me out of it for those phones and I kept them hardwired with his Zeus cable. However for my HE6, HE500 and HP2, Robert hardwired them and terminated the connection with a mini xlr and I had him make me a Zeus balance cable so I can keep the Zeus and swap out the headphones.

Did Robert at Aphodite CU29 explain why he thought it was not a good idea to convert T1's to connectors for detachable cable? Does it have something to do with how the cable is terminated on the T1's?

He did.  I can't quote the technical reasons but the way I interpreted it, the T1 has an uncanny resolving ability and inserting that additional connector would be noticeable.  For the other headphones, it would not be as noticeable but it would be there though.  I took his advice on the T1 since I had already had Robert hardwired a Zeus cable but for the others, I decide the ability to only buy 1 cable was worth the lost sonics.  My listening position is roughly 12 feet away so quality cables were getting expensive to say the least.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I will contact Robert at Aphodite CU29 after I sell some headphones that I don't use, and some other audio stuff to pay for recable.

You will like much more the T1 with the Zeus. After I bought them i was about to give up on them and Robert convinced me to let him recable them with the Zeus. The picture of the T1 in the Robert's website are actually mine. After the recable job they got more refined, clean and the harshness of the top end was gone. IMO well worth the money.

Pls disregard previous post. I just found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1mEMUdHSEE

Re cabling those would be a lot of fun and very easy. Great design by Beyerdynamic. Very simple and functional. I want a pair of those cans some day..
