I bought a pair of SR80's used that need a recabling job. The plug has come off and I'd like it shortened a couple of feet. Is it a hard DIY job? I don't know how to solder but I'm not averse to learning. Would it just be easier to take it to someone?

edit: I suppose I could shorten the cable and then attach a plug, right? That would be easier than recabling entirely, I imagine. Is that a DIY job?

Not hard at all, IMO. Soldering a new plug on just requires steady hands and adhering to some simple rules. You can pick up a cheap iron at Radio Shack that will suffice for something like this for what you'd pay to ship your headphones elsewhere. If you Google, you can find instructions on soldering and see what's involved. Lastly, it's recommended around here you avoid the plugs Radio Shack sells and go with a brand like Neutrik.

Thanks for that pointer. I'm out of my depth here, though. I don't know any of those companies listed or whether they sell what I need. I can't seem to find a straight 3.5 mm jack from Neutrik. Am I missing it? Any other brands I could look at? Preferably ones from amazon since I've got prime and get free shipping - would be nice for such a cheap item. :)

If you're just re-terminating with a new end that's relatively simple. I'd recommend some "Helping Hands" for anything though since I've screwed up some stuff (more delicate than a 3.5mm TRS plug would ever be, so don't worry about it too much) with my attempts at holding multiple things and the iron all at once.

Amazon doesn't seem to actually sell any replacement plugs though. I also noticed you need to make sure to get a plug that will fit the cable's outer diameter.

I also found these tutorials showing exactly how to do this:

Awesome. Too bad shipping is $5 for a $.98 part! That second one is the one you'd recommend for the Grado cable? I really appreciate the help. :) Now I need to find some replacement foams...

I seem to be having some issues with the Edit button on here... It's submitting new posts instead?

Anyway, yeah. I haven't actually measured but the Grado cable looks like it should fit a .25" diameter jack. For pads, I would look at the Head-Fi sponsors that sell Grados.

if you need a new plug for your Grados, i recommend this one from Radio Shack. Solid and looks classy.
