It should be fairly obvious when you try them out.  If you've noticed, the plug uses a TRRS balanced layout so it won't work from most headphone-outs by default.  One of the cables simply removes one of the rings on the plug and turns it into a normal TRS plug, one of them swaps the channels and turns it into TRS, and one of them swaps the channels and keeps the TRRS plug.

You'd want to swap the channels if you want to wear them over-the-ear, and I'd assume you'd have no use for using it with the TRRS plug so just use one of the TRS adapters.  (I'm not aware of any amps or DAPs that can actually use the TRRS plug right now, actually)

Why use the swap cable to wear these over the ear? So many companies sell IEM's that can be used straight or over the ear, yet they don't include an alternative cable to swap channels. Are HIFiman's IEM's alone offering this feature?
