I thought it was called Gravity because it's gravity that's working against them: if gravity weren't an issue, they wouldn't have had to deal with the debris (and it's constant reappearances) in the first place.

 
I agree with RUMAY408 when he wrote that "regaining gravity was the goal of the proponents". Regaining the Earth's gravity is the goal of this survival story. That's what I understood from reading reviews and Cuaron's interviews. Though I didn't buy into the story itself. For me the movie is more about visual ( plus sound) experience rather than the plot and it's metaphoric message.  

It was both. Gravity was both a challenge, the enemy, but it was also a friend, the means to gain the ultimate goal of getting home...

Captain Phillips (2013) 7/10


Saw it Thursday night, 2D regular theater.
Hanks gets plenty of face time, he sure has turned into an old Grizzly Adams for this film.
Kept imagining Sean Connery and "Hunt for Red October" during any lull in the movie.
If you know this story from the news, well no surprises for you here, it is set up like a documentary.
High, khat chewing, gunpowder smoking Somali pirates provide all the uncertainty, looking for a big payday.
Some good acting, worth a look.

Netflix, so why not watch Frank Vincent carry over his Sopranos routine?
I happened to not mind this one at all, though not nearly as good as Goodfellas or Casino gangster flicks he was in.
Old dude still hanging onto his old Tommy gun, clinging to the words "better get the F**q outta my way"...

The Naked Civil Servant (1975) 7/10


Hulu is where this classic was, had a re-watch of the Quentin Crisp story.
The movie is exaggerated as was the eccentric Crisp himself...

Technical achievements aside, here's whats interesting:
- the theme of solace. Space is as empty as it gets
- the theme of an anchor. Your ground in life.
- the beauty of our unique world.

Its interesting how the experience of space(emptiness) draws out different emotions in different people. Some find it lonely, others find it peaceful. Thats the beauty of emptiness.

Tied with the royal mess NASA is in right now, it couldn't have better timing. I think I for one will respect and support space exploration even more.

PS: See it on a big screen. The biggest you can find. A good sound system won't harm either.

Yes I enjoyed this one as well, the new English remake starring Vince Vaughn was promoted for release Nov.22 at the Captain Phillips screening.
Don't think it will have the cache of the original French version.
Couldn't be any worse than Vaughn's utter schlock with Owen Wilson "The Internship (2013)", what a pile of stink, I thought...

I really hope they do a good job with it, cause I found Starbuck to be a really refreshing change of pace, you know? My favorite movies are always the ones where I find myself caring about and/or having some sort of emotional reaction to the characters. In this case, I really end up rooting for the guy and it made me want to jump into the movie and hang out with everyone at the lake lol

Saw a few positive reviews of this movie in here and in another forum so gave it a shot tonight. It was surprisingly engaging and even tense at times. The two hours flew by and I felt it was solid from start to finish.

Yes this one's a good movie. I got to watch it in an almost empty cinema, the silent environment was most welcome as some of the scenes are tense.

Adventureland



It was surprisingly engaging. I thought they cast it pretty well, even though I don't like Jessie Eisneberg, Kristen Stewart, or Ryan Reynolds. You really feel like these people are just trying to get through things. Kind of fell apart at the end for me though in that it just became... Standard. It almost set too high expectations for itself in getting there.

7/10 on the optimistic side.

Based on the book [4/10] what the hell and I watching, Jay Z... doing a BGM... really, and... all this over the top showy non sense... REALLY. I miss the balance of the craziness and sex, with the darker over tones
 
Now, based purely as a it's own reality [7.5/10]
 
A joy to watch, Jay-Z is the only thing holding this movie back, as I think he's a moron. thank gawd for Will I Am. And again, visually it's insane, the story is crazy and over all it is an enjoyable movie! I'm liking it, liking the insanity, and waiting for a darkness to set in. And I'm enjoying the actors as well in this, D
 
I am for one FLOORED, by the BASS coming out of my Dt 880s... DAMN I forget just how much I live these, cans and WHOA for the first time... they are really GOOD with movies!  [Gatsby is the first movie I've watched since I got my Baanced Dt 880 and my AGD 10ES2] So while I do hate Jay-Z, I can appreciate how even the DT 880s can,,, make him almost tolerable. 
 
Also DiCaprio does a nice job as Gatsby, I'm diggin his troubled...deminor. He is very dark and strange, again visually this is a nice movie. At the scene where Gatsby see's daisy again, he's soaking wet from the rain, and she's about in tears! Again not as I remember it in the book, but for it's own worth. I'm enjoying it very much

Think i'm going to go see Captain Phillips again, but this time on the IMAX screen.
Couldn't stop thinking about this movie after I left the theater. The last movie that did that was the South Korean film "Poetry".
 
I would say it's some of Tom Hanks' best acting yet. I kept saying "Man, doesn't this guy ever get scared?"..well let's just say that I don't want to ruin things. The answer to that is...well nevermind.
Somehow the movie seemed to portray effectively the effect this ordeal had on him without really Tom Hanks saying anything or the scriptwriter spelling it all out for us.
Apparently the real life thing was much worse than what was shown in the movie.

Mostly due to the mock executions where the Captain felt as if he was going to die at any moment

 
If it wasn't for the acting then the movie would not be nearly as good. It's definitely not a drama but felt totally real, but NOT like a documentary AT ALL. No heroes at all on board the ship.
At times I was worried they'd change reality and turn someone into like John Rambo or something.
 
NOTE: I'd say this was the best movie i've seen this year in the theater.
