The books were a big hit in China, and in 2014 when the first book in the series was translated to English it was the first novel by an Asian writer to win a Hugo Award for Best Novel, and was nominated for a Nebula award as well. The books were recently adapted into a TV show in China by Tencent and I think that did well. Changes were made by the Netflix production to make it more friendly to an international audience, with the original author as a consultant. The location was moved from China to London, and Chinese characters were changed to be people from other places and some alterations were made to character roles. The Netflix version has been controversial in China:

There's been ongoing conjecture about whether the books are an allegory for Chinese nationalism (where the aliens represent the west). In 2019 the author publicly said it is not a nationalistic allegory:

If you've read The Foundation books by Isaac Asimov, you may not like the show... it's a well made show, but the show's story doesn't actually follow the books much at all. It's a strange adaptation IMO.
The one positive thing that came from watching this series is that I now have heard about the books and how good they are.
They're on my must read list and I plan on getting the first in the series ASAP.
I wasn't aware when I watched this that it was based on a book series by a Chinese author. It's good that at least they had a diverse cast in this one.
I'm glad they didn't have the entire film in English.
I've heard from reviews that some of the scientists in the series were not even real characters from the book. Now it makes sense why they were such poorly written characters.
For anyone that is interested in the Chinese series, Episode 1 seems to be available on Youtube for free and it's not pirated, but a legal free episode from the company that released it.
I plan on watching episode one. Not likely any US streaming services have the Chinese version though. I'd buy it if I could, but not pay for a third streaming service.
BTW I was thinking how cool it would be to have someone like Denis Villeneuve direct every episode. He would be a perfect fit for the series if you've seen "Arrival".
That was a movie I disliked in the theater, but I had missed crucial dialogue that's important to understand the story. I watched it at home and loved it. How does that happen?! It has a really great soundtrack too!
The 3 Body Problem just seems like a book that would be insanely difficult to translate to a TV series.
I imagine the Chinese version is a lot better.
Not so fun fact: Did you know there is a version of Breaking Bad from Mexico?
Would be amusing to watch.
