Yes, it has the capacity to ruin a pair of headphones.  This greatly depends on how exposed to the elements your pair of headphones are.

I dared to use only IEM's while it was raining (never a full/on-ear headphones) , they never got broken.
 
I even accidently thrown them while in the gym, while messing with the "walker"

Rain and cans don't mix well. You'll definitely ruin your cans. I use iem when i'm out and they don't get as wet as headphones unless it's raining really hard.

I wore some iBuds under some heavy rain and they survived. That's why I stiil use them for exercise. I won't be too disappointed if they are ruined.

My akg k420 survived an accidental wash in my washing machine so i assume they will survive rain as well.
tho there might be a short circuit which I believe can ruin your cans.
