You are literally the first person I have met that didn't like the ZMF pad on the SR1a, so I guess YMMV.
Pictures attached for reference. The ZMF pad goes over the top leather strap and the metal chassis band. Then you use the top leather strap under the ZMF pad to adjust the high of the ribbon drivers as needed.

Has anyone had issues with ears getting “hot” after long listening sessions? Ribbon speakers tend to sound hot and was wondering if the issue is the same for these.

I use a tube pre, but, no they don’t get hot due to the treble (at least not for me). I have previously found the Utopias to be hot at times (could have been related to my equipment at the time though). I’ve not experienced that hotness with the SR1as.
The SR1a is hot by nature. You put a neutral gear such as Benchmark HPA4 | DAC3B | AHB2 x 2 and it is too hot. However, adding the Convolution filter changes that in a big way. The heat goes down tremendously. I wrote up a lot about what I have tried in other posts on this thread. To summarize those posts, using the Convolution filter, I was able to get rid of a very good tube DAC, expensive speaker wire, and my AHB2 (back to floor standers). I am now using a $1500 Gustard X26 Pro DAC, a topping pre90 preamp ($600) + a CODA 07x preamp, and a $1500 Classs D D-Sonic M3a800s with 400 watt @ 8 Ohm. I have been able to drastically lower the cost of my system and still have it not hot with the Convolution filter.
One of the best pieces of gear I had on the SR1a was the KRELL K-300i integrated (anyone want to buy it). I will be getting it back tomorrow. I am looking forward to hearing how it sounds but this time with the Convolution filter because without the filter it was a 10/10 on the SR1a.
You should try because most believe they offer a significant improvement. I was rather shocked about how much of a difference they make in a positive way
