Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A

interestingly I find that I am less fatigued Listening to the sr1a with the jotr than I am with the abyss tc or susvara due to lack of cupping effect.....I am open to listening to potentially better amps but afraid if I like what I hear I will buy it lol

Despite the harsher tone of the JotR, I feel the same way as you in that the lack of a baffle makes listener-fatigue much less likely. It's not a subtle effect.

Mine was too...bought a new house. :p

Can't wait for 2 more weeks before I can hook up my gear once again (and 2 months of being boxed up).

The natural solution ofcourse

Just ordered the SR1A + Jotunheim R with DAC!

Reading through the thread about the Abyss AB-1266 (Phi TC is the one I was going to buy) led me to this headphone. I realized that I wanted something unique, instead of just a % improvement of the same stuff I've been hearing for years, and, hey, I also get to save $800 vs. the Abyss TC -- and much likely much more, as my best amp is merely a THX 789. And as for the SR1A + Jotunheim, I am glad that I won't have to search around for speaker amps.

I never heard high-end speakers or even quality monitors, and clarity, instrument separation, and detail are the most important traits in a headphone to me, so I'm very excited to experience this. And as my current favorite headphone is the HD 800 S, the SR1A's lack of subbass extension won't be a big problem for me. My other supposedly endgame-level headphone is the ZMF Verite Closed, which I find to be disappointing due to its tuning, which I should've realized wouldn't be to my taste (way too thick, not enough treble - sounds like mud to me above very low volume).

And heads up: I have strong social anxiety, so I probably won't be reading responses to my posts. I will be posting impressions, though, when it gets here, either tomorrow or Friday.

Extremely excited, $4200 poorer (over the course of six months, though, due to PayPal Credit), but also nervous as hell after being burned by the ZMF VC, but I think I made the right choice this time!

Has anyone tried the SRH1A with the Bakoon AMP-13R speaker amp?
Won't work well. You really ought to employ an power amp -- as they'll ultimately scale over a HSA-1b. Uberamp is still being developed through.

Are there any specs on this upcoming uberamp?

If you search the other place or simply google 'kevin gilmore and now for something completely different', you'll see its roots as an all-out power amp.
Initially I bugged Kevin for an adapted design to drive the Abyss which I later bugged him for direct-drive of the SR1a.

I haven't yet heard Raals, but I remember well how comfy AKG K1000 were. Lack of any pressure in the ear area cheanged how I experienced these cans and SR1a most likely aren't any different in this regard.

I loved my K1000, but these Raals are a whole different beast. Better in every way.

This would come as no surprise considering how much apart in time they are, but are SR1a any more comfortable than AKGs?

Guess what arrived? Listening to my SR1a's driven by the JotR but not using it's dac at the moment, using my Kann balanced xlr to the JotR balanced XLRs - it works fine. No early impressions - just hooked up. Physical impressions: very beautiful headphone with careful attention to details - love the carbon fiber wings - they really are purposefully built and add so much to the soundstage it's awesome. Comfort: the most comfortable phones initially - will report back. Love the mechanism for adjustments and the back strap. As for Headamp shipping - awesome packing and overnighted for free so who's complaining.

update1: scalability is confirmed - better DAC = Better detail - confirmed and excited.

update2: comfort: this SR1a is like a medical device crossed with an earspeaker. Thoughtfully crafted and more comfortable than any headphone I’ve ever worn. I have the empyrean and MS 3.2 and they are tied for a close 2nd. Extremely happy with this piece of kit comfort wise. If I had to gripe it would be in regards to placing them into their pelican box- a real challenge to fit the formed space but, you know, 1st world problems....yadayadayada.

Yeah, they are. Adjusting them requires bending some spring steel, but once they’re dialed in they put next to no pressure on your head. The only thing touching your head is the high-quality leather strap and the pads, which are cashmere-soft.
The K1000 are in no way uncomfortable, but the temple pads are relatively hard. Not so on the SR1a.
