R5, a new Android DAP by Hiby

It was pointed out to me that the number next to the battery icon is just the rate that is possible. If you touch the HD or Ultra HD icon whilst the track is playing (full screen) the rate it is playing at comes up. There are very few tracks that 'allegedly' play at 192. Playing some Neil Young tracks and they play at 44.1 Khz. Still sound good to me though...but my ears are old and satisfied. I'm talking about Amazon by the way.
The number next to the battery icon is absolutely the rate the player is playing at. How it got there (via fixed resampling to a fixed sample rate regardless of the source file's sample rate, in the case of Amazon) is another matter entirely.

Thank you for your insight. My hi res files are purchased, many of which are 24/192 (all of my Neil albums purchased from the Pono Store, as an example). When I play my hi res files, the indicator next to the battery actually shows the correct sample rate now that I’ve done a reset. I’m not sure why the issue of it only displaying 48K happened, perhaps I selected something in Settings that caused this, but I’m happy the reset resolved the problem.

I primarily use the R5 for Radio Paradise’s lossless stream at 16/44.1. Great site for music discovery!

I now know why my R5 was fixed at 48K output, I had downloaded some of the plug-ins and the two EFOtech versions in the HiBy Music app fix the output at 48K according to the info about them.

@Joe Bloggs
Hi Joe,
A simple question, I see that the ne HiBy R2 can stream Tidal. Can it stream Amazon HD? My button finger is getting itchy. Thank you.
Steve
No. 😅 The R3/R3pro can stream Tidal and Qobuz. The R2 can stream Tidal now and may be able to stream Qobuz after an update.

Hey Joe, this morning I was listening to a Spotify playlist and noticed that the R5 indicator was orange, then I noticed that the frequency reported in the shade was saying 352.8K!
This continued for the last few tracks in the playlist, then when I returned to these tracks later (neither the R5 nor Spotify had been shut down in the meantime) the light was it's usual blue, and reporting the usual 44.1K.
I took advantage of the 99p for 4 months of Amazon offer yesterday and now have the Amazon Music app installed, I wonder if it's possible that's interfered with the Spotify reporting somehow? (I confess to complete ignorance of the inner workings of Android et-al BTW, but that's probably obvious from my question).

If your BT works reasonably (some have poor BT) then it is excellent. I use the HiBy LDAC to transmit to the iFi Zen Blue connected to a mini Cambridge Tripath Amp and then to Wharfdale Diamond speakers. Really good. Also transmits to my Radsone ES100 LDAC and to various separate BT ear/headphones. Should work well.

I use LDAC in the 'other direction' from my Sony phone to the R5 with great success (for Youtube, Netflix and the like) both range and sound have been excellent so far, and connection stablility has also been very good.
I've also used BT in a vehicle quite a lot, and it's been rock solid (hardly surprising though as I'm sure the car employs/requests a lesser codec than LDAC, and they're typically more reliable), quality in the car is also very good (as far as I can tell in the noisy environment, with the crappy stock KIA sound system).

EDIT:
Just remembered that I had problems using BT audio out from my phone while playing games on Google Stadia (simultaneous use of BT audio, and wireless gamepad though, so probably just too demanding in some way).
The sound would be perfect for a few minutes, then degrade to completely unintelligible noise which would not recover until I'd restarted the Stadia app, only to break up again within a few minutes.

Do you possibly also have TIDAL installed and running in the background?

Would really like to see the a proper parametric equaliser over MSEB. Can't get used to how MSEB works at all makes no sense and trying to use of some known EQ for certain headphones is impossible to implement. The convolver whilst nice doesn't cut it as its limited across one sample rate. Do not want to change for each source it's just not practical for playlists.

No, I uninstalled it some time ago when I returned to Spotify.
Amazon is the only other thing I've installed recently (apart from convolver, but that's disabled as I haven't been able to work out how to use it yet).

Yes, the different downloads and what each is meant to do should be better explained in a revision to the manual or a separate white paper.
