Quick thoughts on Simphonio RX10
Dec 14, 2021 at 11:15 PM Post #16 of 44
@Owludio tell us how is going😊
Sorry, was sick and busy and most of my attention went to fighting with the fit, that size-wise is pushing my tolerance limits, in addition to sharp edge of the "Turbines".:face_palm:
I knew it going in, - shallow fit and medium-large width sounded like my perfect isolating High End IEM.
And it's close, but...
Bass is as good as YouTube reviewers claim, very tactile, resolving, subtly present with massive attack when called for. Tonality is warm and even a bit too dark for my taste, however I've noticed more changes with burn in and have yesterday set it for 24 hour and will leave it till weekend, when I'll do more cable swapping and maybe able to post some impressions. Vocals are emotional as "promised".
Unfortunately it arrived last week along with Monarch MK2 & Fiio FH9 and that is just not fair to RX10. I'm not getting correct percussion timbre from RX, in comparison. It could be cable, could be my hearing change(upper treble sensitivity).
So, not fair to judge until burn in completes.
Also, QDC Solo does have more bass than RX10 but quality of RX10 bass is in LX legue! Solo bass is interesting, very punchy and bouncy, not sure yet if I end up liking it though...
BTW, cable is not "garbage", it's just sonically not a good match IMHO.

Thanks a lot! Could you please briefly compare these to 3DT (my current main IEMs), Volt (the ones I'm hunting for but can't find yet) and M9 (somewhat close to my Z5 which I found to be the best pairing from my herd with recently bought DX300 though not ideal for sure)?

Just a brief update, i have paired it with the toxic black widow v2 copper cable, which i find enhancing RX10's characteristics: vocal density, bass texture, atmospheric construction and overall 'thickness' and warmness which i enjoy so much IMG20211215150509.jpg

Did you have a chance to sum up some early impressions last weekend?
I'm still on the fence: they are still available for $390 on local classifieds while Isabellae / IT07 (the ones I've been hunting for a while as highly praised pairings for DX300) are almost impossible to find.

Alright, I've dropped a few pics to illustrate what I'm about to write about.
First of all, sorry for the delay; this is the hardest IEM to figure out after Rose Miracle(that I'm yet to figure out, but that's another story...) Also, I'm treble sensitive and most of the time IEMs with resolving upper treble make percussion and other upper treble dependent instruments sound thin.
I don't think I'm qualified to review RX10 as it's a first single DD IEM of this class, so all I can offer is a subjective opinion that has to be taken with a caution.
My experience with single DD is limited to something like Fiio FD5 which IMO performs at the top tier level as well as RX10 does but also with a caveat.

So, RX10 has been my daily driver since my last post and should get more than 100 hours on it between listening from commute to commute throughout a work day and burn-in when I take it off(which also helps to avoid accumulation of condensate and dry IEM out. It didn't change much, I've noticed more change from switching to 8 core copper cable which added some body to cymbals and upper strings.
1. I value technical performance but accurate tonality I value more and this is where the first wow comes:
Starting with the lowest sub-bass through upper mids - it's absolute tonal perfection with timbrel realism only 2-nd to Audeze Euclid that is at the next level. Euclid though has virtually no bass dynamics.:triportsad:
RX10 is the opposite- one of the most dynamic and responsive drivers. 2nd WOW. In fact I prefer lower part of RX range to virtually any other IEM in my collection and that includes IMR Astra and Thie Monarch MK2!
2. Amount of bass goes like this: Fiio FH7, Monarch MK2, Fiio FD5, FH9, Simphonio RX10, Shuoer EJ07M, MEST1, iBasso it07, IMR Astra, ISN EST50. last 3 is a basshead territory IMO.
3. Control of RX10 bass is one of the best: RX10, IMR Astra, Monarch MK2, Fiio FH7,9, FD5, iBasso it07(all are top tier and close call), then EJ07M(also not bad at all), & ISN EST50 -basshead party.
The top tier ones tend not to lose resolution during heavy bass lines.
RX10 bass is addictive. If I switch to any other IEM, even MEST & Monarch, - I start to miss it immediately. The only IEM that holds my attention is Fiio FH9 as its bass is flatter but comparable in quality(perhaps better, but too soon to tell as I haven't even burnt in that one yet).
Speaking of flatter: RX10 is anything but - so articulate, so tight, even when subterranean sub lines are dropped! RX10 bass is 3d like, similar to Fiio and IMR.
4. The tuning: as I mentioned, to my taste lower part is perfection. RX10 is #1 and there is no close 2nd.
Now is a controversial part - upper mids through treble: I perceive upper mids lacking a body but BEWARE, that I perceive some of that also on Sony ier-M9. I use M9 with aftermarket copper cable to mitigate it. Also with perfect source and recording that somehow stops being noticeable turning in pure clarity.
Stage is not the widest but imaging is excellent. In fact stage on M9 is much wider, and TBH M9 imaging is better due probably to clearer upper treble. Tonality wise RX10 is reminiscent of M9 as it has the same emphasis on upper treble. Bass of RX10 however is tuned better than M9 and it's not close(sorry M9 fans, just remember, I'm a freak:alien:):smile_phones:
Also, both it07 and all Fiios have vastly larger stage. If you love bass, - it07 or ISN EST50 are both fantastic and to me - comparable.

So, I cannot safely recommend RX10 because of treble oddity. BTW, treble of EJ07M is my all-time favorite. If RX10 had that treble- it would be TOTL end game for me.

Nonetheless it's a keeper: I bought it for isolation and fit and as expected it fills my ear-conchas completely and heavy ceramic-like body + non-vented DD makes the most isolating (non-hearing-aid-compatible (Shure SE846)) IEM I have currently.
Also, beware of very wide dimensions, it's wider than Monarch MK2. It's shallow and wide, perfect for me but YMMW.
Listening was done through iBasso DX160 and Note20U+Paw S1 from Tidal & Amazon HD.
As you can see below, I have some molding silicone covering sharp edges. I'll replace it to permanent fix soon as this IEM isn't going anywhere...:sunglasses:

I wish someone like @Dsnuts got to review RX10. Thanks for treble filter suggestion for FH9,- you were right yet again, but that is for different thread...
Also thanks to @Xinlisupreme for poking, I wouldn't be writing otherwise, as I'm still not sure...

Both of those are safer fit-wise and at least it07 I can say is fantastic indeed even with DX160. Isabellae though has different bass tuning, more like FD5(judging for graph) - warmer but less accurate. I was considering that one but rejected due to that and inferior isolation.

3DT has lean bass with great control, but RX10 is on the next level IMO. Z5 is darker, a lot darker, and bass sounds bloated and getting in the way too much. I love that IEM but it's not universal. But Z5 has fabulous treble, maybe RX10 upper treble is too much for me, but you may be more adaptive. All of those IEMs have wider stage than RX10.
Volt has FD5/Isabellae type bass, not for every genre. Also, Z5 has similar tuning and IMHO does it better.

I wish someone like @Dsnuts got to review RX10. Thanks for treble filter suggestion for FH9,- you were right yet again, but that is for different thread...
Also thanks to @Xinlisupreme for poking, I wouldn't be writing otherwise, as I'm still not sure...
:vulcan:
@Owludio great feedback, thank you very much!

Quick update: Just received Shanling UP5. I had the best synergy for RX10 with UP4 out of all my portables, otherwise was on the fence about UP5 ridden with firmware issues... BUT OMG! :scream: I didn't realize Sabre DAC makes so much difference. I'm blown away!
Treble oddity is almost gone and soundstage exploded beyond belief. Sure, it would be fair to test it with other IEMs but for now - I'm addicted.
@Xinlisupreme : After your experience with shallow fitting SA6, I'm sure you cringed looking at RX10 side-view earlier. This brings shallow-wide to a new level...
So folks, beware, Fit of this beast is a roll of the dice. It either fits near perfect if you've got ears with shallow conchas, like me, or you'd end up selling it. Maybe there is a good reason for used price discount.

Switched to it07 on UP5: well, now percussion sounds perfect. Too bassy and too warm in comparison with equally wide and deep stage but less air on top. And a welcome relief from pain from RX10 fit. it07 has truly universal fit - at different angles and with different tips I don't see many ear-shape limitations unlike RX10. I personally can fit it securely several ways.
I think Simphonio should release something more universal. Sound wise, if I had to choose, - I'd choose RX10 even with treble imperfections.

Reading your feedback I think you’ll like Faudio Dark Sky, highs aren’t offending bass dig even better than IT07 and voices have more body.
A real good all rounder

3DT has lean bass with great control, but RX10 is on the next level IMO. Z5 is darker, a lot darker, and bass sounds bloated and getting in the way too much. I love that IEM but it's not universal. But Z5 has fabulous treble, maybe RX10 upper treble is too much for me, but you may be more adaptive. All of those IEMs have wider stage than RX10.
Volt has FD5/Isabellae type bass, not for every genre. Also, Z5 has similar tuning and IMHO does it better.
Thanks a lot! As I'm also treble sensitive, I'll skip RX10 then and probably go FD7 / IT07 / Isa way instead

Its a little surprising to see comments mentioning rx10 having too much treble, but in my case im using a 22awg copper wire to have even fuller sound. Everyone's listening perception is based on his comparisons on past different earphones, i have sold the FD5 because its piercing treble at times. I am not trying to oppose or challenge other people's opinions, but just to raise my own part of opinion, imo RX10 is amongst the fullest and warmest earphone.if i hadn't purchased the spear labs ASL4.5 last week, RX10 is definitely also having the top 1 bass quality of all IEMs.

Maybe my recent 1 year experience on below earphones could be the reason for my above opinion: noble tux 5, kinera baldr, skuld, norn, freya(all relatively bright and light compared to rx10), see audio bravery, yume. Li yuan, 64 u6t, u18s, duo(tried these, do not own), dunu zen(bright)

Thanks for this! We actually don't disagree at all.
Agree that RX10 is not the brightest sounding IEM, and also agree that FD5 could be insufferable with its bright lower treble that also sounds a bit peaky to me.
RX10 only bothered me with too much(to my preference) of UPPER treble. It's not fatiguing, but it changes tonality of percussion, just like another not too bright IEM ier-M9.
As I mentioned, I'm a freak:alien: with mid-high part of treble sensitivity (8-14K), went out of my way to warn about that.:warning:
RX10 indeed very full and warm, not quite Z5, Volt or it07 levels, but those are too warm to my taste. RX10 tuning is "audiophile perfect" IMHO, and once I find a good match of source and cable - the potential hopefully will be realized. UP5 today was a big step in that direction.
Spear labs ASL4.5 - is it the one with magneto-static ABM twitter? I have Noble M3 that has very promising ABM treble but sloppy tuning, unfortunately.:triportsad: Is there a place to read about Spear labs here on Head-fi?
DUNU Zen - I'm glad I dodged that one,:relieved: so apparently graphs don't lie.
I have IEMs that do a lot of things better, but they don't isolate. RX10 checks most of the boxes for me.:relaxed:
BTW, how do you find fit of RX10? I actually wish it was a bit smaller...
To be fair, most IEMs have too much treble for me. I mentioned Roland, - do I need to say more?:smile_phones:

I use BQEYZ copper cable similar to yours(I think ) Original cable was single crystal copper, so no guarantee, but sounds similar to other HQ 8 core copper. Bought it long time ago for Fearless Roland initially for the same reason.

@vanez1985 Only skip RX10 if you're also sensitive to UPPER treble. And fit is really dicey:weary:. I'm lucky - one notch larger, and it would be unusable to me.:face_palm: Fit wise FD7 sounds safer. But I understand that Fiio sub-bass slightly rolled off. They make up for it in dynamics, so at least on FH7/9 it's acceptable. Didn't hear FD7. Don't like fit of FD5, so skipped FD7. it07 is actually brighter on lower treble, esp 8K.
