Classical, electronica, alternative, punk, and jazz are my main genres. I've tried AKGs from the k501 to the k1000: with solo and small ensembles to symphonies, jazz trios, and acoustic rock. No matter what, AKGs just seem to lack timbre and body for my ears. Honestly, it seems that those who prefer AKGs or Senns tends to be for the same genres: classical, jazz, and accoustic. They're both good headphones, but they're different enough that some will just gravitate towards one or the other. IMO, it's the whole we have different shaped ears and that influences the sound we hear from a headphone thing. No matter what amp or source, I find the k701 too thin sounding: just as k701 fans feel that the HD650 is too thick sounding. To each his own!

*sigh*...Seems like you have no fight left in ya huh?

haha man, dont add me. The AKGs are my first real head phone. Ive been into car sound systems when i was younger and wanted to relive that experience in my head...get it? haha anyhow. I am not huge on having multiple headphones, but there's no saying somewhere down the road i'll have more than 1.

I am sure the latter is true as im a huge fan of music.

but more importantly, I really enjoy the AKG, but please do not presume that i am a fanboy (i do have akg drum cases though, hmm). I was just asking for his opinion on whether he listened to classical based on his assessment

. Rose, can say whatever he likes but none of that will persuade me that to the AGKs sound thin. Like Mr Rose said, to each their own.

oh heck add me!

Well, I'm not really an AKG fanboy, more a Beyer convert, now.. BUT, I still have a warm spot in my heart for the K701s... and will defend their honor against so called Sennhoser fanatics!

And this is why we have fanclubs
biggrin.gif
I'm entitled to rave about why I don't like AKGs when AKG fans rave about why they don't like Senns

Seriously, why does each fanclub say that the other ones are bad because they like their headphones is beyond me. Every club criticizes the other for needing a special amp, burn-in, and recables to sound good (go on any headphone appreciation thread for any brand, and it's the same thing!!). Lets be content that we have choices!

Why? 650s and 701s appeal to different genres of music and very different end users.

The only thing I'd argue with is the genres of music: read any of the endless 650 vs 701 threads, and it's usually how they render classical and jazz. I think some of our preferences is based on perception: headphones are going to sound different for each individual because they are so close to your uniquely shaped ear. While I find all AKGs thin sounding, obviously not everyone hears that. While I think Senns sound more natural, obviously not everyone hears that either.

Personally I think DT990s come across more natural and ROBUST... btw, I listen to classical and jazz...well, I mainly stick with acoustical... sometimes, on a RARE occasion Massive Attack finds it's way into my cd player.. But this is all attributed to my freak ears..

I think what I had intended to convey was: the 650s are more lush and full-bodied lending themselves to classical and symphony whereas the 701s are more analytic and
play a wider soundstage better. I find my 650s congested even with Zu cables on certain genres of music where the 701s can seem thin and dry with large tracks of strings, woodwinds etc. Different headphones, different genres.

Poor K701s.... so misunderstood.... *sniffle*... I think the K701s mids are 'godly'... vocals sound so crisp and clear.... besides, the K701s look better than the boooooooooooooooring *yawn* look of the HD650s... Maybe they'll get it right with the HD700s? Ah, they won't!

You guys are lucky. You have stable preferences. Me, I feel like a politician.... I waffle back and forth between polar opposites, the 650s and 880s ....
k1000smile.gif

Some times the 650s sound like the be all and end all, with the most realistic sound I've ever heard, and then, all of sudden, they veil me over and bass me out and I have to switch to the 880s. Now, all of a sudden, those same 880s that sounded all treblely and bass shy become a window of clarity, with their deep articulated bass, crystal clear extension and resolution and enormous sound stage.... now I'm cooking.... I can hear details deep into the recording and some times into the room the recording was made in.... it is the most realistic sound I've ever heard...

a few days later..... it starts all over again.
evil_smiley.gif

But, in general, I spend 90% of my time around 3:00 on the amp, with the 880s, low level listening....
