Does this device use the line out of the iPod, or does it use a direct digital signal?

In other words, are the Burr-Brown op amps in the signal chain when using the iPod in the dock?

The dock only utilizes the line-out function of the ipod.  Unfortunately, for now Fiio does not have the license from Apple necessary to create such a product, at least not yet.

Thanks!

I had read that there were only a few such licenses handed out so far. Which devices do hold it, do you know?

There are few devices(that I know of) that have this function, two of which are portable:Cypher Labs' AlgoRythm Solo, Fostex HP-P1.  The other is a series of non-portable products by PeachTree Audio.  Here are links to a few articles that go a bit more in-depth on each device.-http://www.headfonia.com/revolutionary-the-cypher-labs-algorhythm-solo-clas/
