Hi I'll make this brief. I love my FPS and want to get more from my sound. I current game using a ps3 and run my headphones(sennheiser HD590) from my samsung series 5 TV. I'm not getting the best from my phones, I sacked the sound for the quilty vision with the full intent to running a full separte setup for audio once money allowed.

I want to go surrond, and my first port of call looking at Tritton AX Pro: Precision Gaming Headset with Dolby 5.1 True Surround Sound however after spending some time doing research I have become totally comfussed as to if something like the Astro Mix Amp and use my HD590 would give me both better sound and better postioning overall. Im a bit dased and confussed about all this, I have a buget of approx 150 quid advice, links suggestions greatly welcomed.

Thanks a lot Little bit lost Dem

after reseaching this same thing i decided to order the Turtle Beach DSS processor. it uses the optical out from your ps3 and then you plug you headphones into that. I actually started looking into this because my TV and speaker bar/receiver both don't have headphone jacks. If you want a headset/chat functionality you could buy their DPX21 which has the DSS and the X21 headset. I'm not sold on those headphones though and dont care about chat, so i'm getting the DSS stand alone and some better headphones for the same price as the DPX21 set.

i plan on checking back after everything arrives. Pretty sure i won't be disappointed though. i'm curious what others think of this, i'm not an expert in this area by any means.

Hi, I own the Astro Mixamp (5.8 wireless version).  I've also tested the Tritton AXPro's.  I can tell you without a doubt, the best combo is to go Astro Mixamp + quality headphone/headset.  I would not recommend the Astro A40 or A30 headsets, they are overpriced and their sound quality is not all that great.  An Astro Mixamp + your HD590's is the way to go.

The Trittons are good for positioning, but the sound quality is pretty bad. In most games I actually prefer virtual 5.1 surround, rather than the Tritton's method of cramming a bunch of subpar speakers for true 5.1.

Also, just getting the Mixamp will save you money since you already have headphones.

A good resource for this type of stuff is the Technology forums at MLG.  I have no experience with the Turtle Beach DDS, but on the MLG forums there are extensive comparisons.  The overwhelming conclusion is the Astro Mixamp is the way to to go.

i looked at the mlg site as you suggest and it looks like there are some notable differences between the dss and the mixamp. turtle beach puts the ability to adjust the ballance between game volume and chat volume on its headsets, so this function is not on the dss, but is on the mixamp. also, the mixamp has multiple inputs were the dss has only the opitical in.

using it with a ps3 i would say the latter is a non-issue. using the optical in is what you want to do even if there were other options. the former may or may not be an issue. if you are interested in a lot of online play, online chat, and don't have the ablity to adjust game and chat volumes seperately on your headset the mixamp may make sence. this is a non issue for me though as i will be mostly using the headphones while single player gaming, am not buying headphones with a mic anyway, and when i do play online i don't say much. plus, game vs chat volume can be adjusted in most games' main menu. its not as convenent and having it right there on your headset, but given my application this is not worth the extra cost.

all in all, i still think the dss is right for me, but it will depend on how you plan on using it for sure. if you shop around online the dss does cost significantly less then the mixamp, and as far as sound quality they apear to be equal.

I have a PS3 too, play COD Black Ops, and I can tell you this: MixAmp ROCKS.

You can use mixamp+HD590+clip-on mic (something like this: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7080) that mic costs US $2.50

Now, mixamp 5.8 wireless is at $100, for introduction price. Many ppl have reviewed the wireless 5.8 vs wired mixamp, and the quality is the same.

Since you already have a good headphone, just go for mixamp 5.8. You won't regret it, that mixamp is really, really good.

There are some glaring problems with the mixamp 5.8 that might not bother most people, but I for one would never buy one.

They will not work right if they are in a LAN environment, and you cannot hardwire the Tx with the Rx which is far to basic and easy a feature to implement to not have.  It still blows my mind that the mixamp 5.8 is wireless only.  Seeing as I have other 5.8ghz devices in my gaming room I will not be buying one of them any time soon.
