PS3 with 20 gig drive: $499, no HDMI, no memory card slot, no wifi.

PS3 with 60 gig drive: $599, 1 HDMI port.

Slated for a US launch on November 17th, 2006 (Japan is November 11th).

Ouch, I may have to pass on the Playstation this go round.

Edit: this news is from the Sony E3 conference.

Not as bad as I thought is was going to be but I think I'm gonna pass until a price drop as well.

A lot if all you do is play games on it, not too bad if blu ray takes hold and the ps3 actually becomes your entertainment hub as Sony hopes it will be.

As usual Sony prices slightly higher than I want to pay. They better have some incredible RPGs or I'm not even going to bother. $499 for the deluxe unit is the most I'd feel is reasonable. Sony is pretty much giving up the fight with 360 and Wii @ those prices.

$500 for a basic version. I thought the xbox 360 was pricey. But it doesn't suprise me as it's Sony.

But what really gets me is that if you take the $ sign off and replace it with the £ sign that will be the typical UK price. *OUCH*

Any news on the release date?

Might hae to go with the xbox 360 instead.

Going from $299 for the PS2 when it came out to $499-599 for the PS3 is just too much of a jump. They seem to be forgetting that the main gaming demographic is kids, not twenty somethings.

yeah, but its usually their "momma" or "dadda" that buys them the console...

Sony certainly doesn't think so.

With their past PSP advertising campaign, they aimed more towards adults, and not kids.

In the UK funnily enough it was twentysomethings who bought it more.

It was later that the kids started to get it when the price was dropped.

It was £299 when it was released in the UK. I remember because I pre-ordered mine. I don't think I will do it this time.

Anyway there is always ebay UK for cheap xbox360 consoles.
