Project Sunrise/PS2 Tube Rolling Thread (and maybe even Project Horizon and Project Ember)

Have a Horizon on the way to do a round-up review of the Ember, Horizon, and Sunrise.

I love the Voskhod 6H6Pi/6N6P tube in my Sunrise III. Electro-Harmonix 12BH7 Gold Pin if I want more detail.

I also have an Electro-Harmonix 6H30Pi Gold Pin now (only tried in Ember) and a couple RCA 6SN7 Smoked glass.

Gonna a fun comparison!

Three amps enter, one amp leaves (and goes back to Jeremy).

I also plan to get a pair of the Garage1217 linear power supplies when those become available.

really looking forward to that !
i'd wondered if it would be worth moving up to the ember SQ wise, i don't really need a lot of power, but the "auto" features would be nice

i posted my frankenrise pic over in the ember, i'd forgotten about the sunrise thread

So far I'd say the Ember is more dynamic, powerful, accurate, and detailed than the Sunrise. And objectively more versatile.

But the Sunrise is romantic if a little soft in sound comparatively.

If the Horizon is like a better Sunrise for my HD650s, the Ember is going to be sold or sent back with the restocking fee.

i have grado cans, and a he500, and the sunrise is great with the grados, and does a real good job with the he500, though not quite as nice as
the gustard i have, so for what i have right now, i'm probably set up pretty good, and that's basically what jeremy said.
jeremy has gone out of his way to be a help with my hum issue, and all i bought from him was the adapter and the newer cover plates.
i bought the sunrise from soundsgoodtome, got a pretty good deal, a few tubes and a jay's audio LPS,

Oh nice! I'm waiting on Jeremy's LPS to add that to my setup. I have heard good things about using an LPS with the Sunrise.

music seems a little more fleshed out punchier, of course, could be some of the old placebo effect, but nothing wrong with that, lol

Tried the EH 6H30PI and a Novosibirsk 6N6P-IR (replacing the cleartop RCA 12AU7) in the Sunrise III and the 6N6P-IR had more detail and impact with solid bass.  It is my favorite so far.  I have a Sylvania chrometop 6NS7 waiting in the wings.

Have you tried the 6SN7 in the Sunrise?

Reproduction Chain: Winyl ASIO -> Schiit Wyrd -> Singxer F-1 -> MHDT Atlantis -> Sunrise III -> HD800

Yep. I ultimately preferred the 6N6P (or IR or 6H30PI--all sound almost exactly the same to me) after rolling dozens of tubes.

Bump for hifi-ness

Scrolling along these pages I got inspired to pickup some new tubes. I've had my PH3 for almost a month now and have been dying to get into tube rolling, especially before I get the supercharger installed.

Here's what's on the way via eBay:

GE Short Gray Plate O Getter 6189/12AU7
JJ Sovtek Fender GT 12AX7
Realistic 12AU7A ECC82 gold pin
Dumont 12AU7A

Honestly I have no idea what to expect and wanted to keep the budget low. Hopefully I come across some good sound here. Can't wait :)

*Definitely going to pick up that TJ full music when I can.

Found a crazy deal on this tube @$45 and snagged it. So far it sounds precisely detailed and has a good balanced soundstage. 0202191141.jpg

What model is that?

@chinook9 it is the Psvane CV181 Tii. The seller said it has gone through 50 hours of burn in but I still believe there is more to go. As fo now it provides a nice balanced tone with complimentary soundstage to the HD600 and more detail than previous tubes that I've used. I ordered 1 6N6P from G1217 and it is fantastic. I believe these 2 tubes as of yet are the best- including the 12BH7- that I have heard.

I have decided that I would like to experiment with other tubes besides the 6922 group of tubes (I have the EH 6922, JJ E88CC Gold,Tesla E88CC Gold). Until recently I haven't spent too much time withe the 12V tubes (besides the Clear Top 12au7 that came with my Ember) but decided earlier this week to purchase a couple of Genalax Gold Lions, namely the12at7 and 12ax7. The 12at7 sounds quite good but the 12ax7 is a high gain tube causing far too much hum and this high gain seriously limits the volume control range. Perhaps I should have gone for the lower gain the Gold Lion 12au7 instead.

I checked the tube offerings listed on the Garage 1217 site and found a few interesting selections but I don't know if they are meant for the Project Ember, perhaps the more experienced out there could enlighten me. Do the following tubes work with the Ember:

6H30PI
6n6PI
6SN7 (with appropriate adaptor)

Thank you
