Prog rock

This probably won't go down well on a prog thread *ducks* but I'm a fan of the period starting with Permanent Waves, through to Power Windows - the more synth-driven stuff basically; never entirely sold on any album before that. I guess hardcore fans would say the stuff I prefer is more pop than prog, but I just think they developed a really cohesive sound in this period. They lost it after Power Windows for me and I lost interest in the band after that, though still respect the musicianship of all three band members. Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals are all great albums. Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows are more patchy, but still have some excellent songs on them.

Goes down well with me that was their best period early 80s. Album after album of amazing music. I actually love Grace under Pressure & Power Windows. In my top 5 Rush. suppose it's my my era really, when I left school. Maybe not Prog but great albums. Played thousands of times in the last 30odd years:-)

Aside from Rush, that album in your avatar is worth mentioning. 'Salisbury" is definitely proto-prog at the very least!

Yes great album. The title track is full on Prog in its scale and ambition. Amazing aural journey as all big classic Prog tracks are.

As for the avatar it's maybe more interesting than the Chieftain tank (on Salisbury Plain?) cover normally used on UK release of album. Maybe use that next time. Makes change from Hammill/VDGG/ various headphones I've used before!

'eap is an absolute favorite of mine, and criminally under-rated. In the states, they were constantly considered the "poor man's Deep Purple." Well, Purple never wrote anything like "Lady in Black", "July Morning", or "Salisbury".

Drops mic, walks off stage

You may be interested in Atomic Rooster as well?

I love being pretentious: you mean that little band Carl Palmer was in? Next you'll be asking me if I ever hear of The Nice...:p

I love this thread, and thanks for letting me know at least someone else remembers Atomic Rooster!

Sorry should have known you'd be familiar with them. Love that early 70s sound (including Deep Purple and ELP!) it's the Hammond Organ!!

Not wanting to break up all the lovely nostalgia, but I have to share this one. Just love:

Amadeus Awad – Death Is Just A Feeling

Sounds holographic in parts on my alpha primes. Just a wonderful prog album.

Maybe two threads could be created; 'Classic Progressive Rock' and 'modern Progressive Rock'?!? :-)

No way man! I am loving reading you guys discuss stuff I never listened to. I was born in 1978 and missed out on much of what you are discussing. I will keep posting the modern stuff I like, would be great if you guys added your thoughts to it so I know how it stacks up compared to the older stuff.

Progressive Rock at its prime like all great older music is all about nostalgia for a different more creative time?

Going to disagree with this. There is LOTS of great and creative new prog coming out everyday - it's just not as popular today and so harder to find.
