Eloy-Ocean: their most successful album

This was the only album of theirs I heard back in the day, (though never owning it myself). Recently I’ve heard the rest of their catalogue and there’s a number of crackers in there. In particular the albums immediately before and after this one - Dawn and Silent Cries and Mighty Echos. Anyone else just familiar with this album would be highly encouraged to explore further.Eloy-Ocean: their most successful album

This is pretty decent, but there are two quite brilliant tracks in the middle (Valhalla and Lost at Sea) which could be the best new tracks I’ve heard this year, shame the rest doesn’t quite match up, but well worth a listen.
Being a guitarist, there’s obviously some amazing guitarists in the Metal field, but I just can’t listen to much of the material. E.g. you are probably aware of the band Wintersun, there’s a stunning solo in the track Winter Madness, but I just can’t listen to the track, because after 10 seconds the drums have just pissed me off so much I have to turn it off![]()
The differences in our tastes is definitely a strength of this thread. For example, when it comes to the more metal side of things listening to some of your recs has actually pushed me to explore and better define where the boundaries are for me on what goes too far for me and what can take an album that might normally be too heavy for my preferences and pull it back into the enjoyable realm. It has expanded my horizons and I really appreciate that about this thread and having guys like you participating in it.![]()
That’s awesome to hear! I’m always a bit hesitant to drop heavier stuff in here since most folks seem more into classic prog-rock. Maybe we should ask the mod to rename the thread Prog Rock & Prog Metal, that would probably help bring in more people to share music with us. Let’s be honest, prog-rock kind of makes it sound like we’re just here to talk about Yes, Genesis, and Pink Floyd lol.
Alright, back to this thread, what do you all think of the new Katatonia? I was traveling last week and only got around to listening to it recently, and honestly… I'm pretty disappointed. I gave it three spins, and so far only a couple of tracks really stand out. It just feels like they’re on autopilot, the spark’s missing. Some parts even sound like they could’ve been written by AI. It’s a shame. They used to be one of my favorite bands. That said, I had a bad feeling when I heard Anders was out. He always felt like the heart and soul of Katatonia, and I don’t think it’ll ever be quite the same without him. Really hoping he brings back Diabolical Masquerade someday.

I think of this thread like a restaurant, I don't have to like everything on the menu to enjoy eating there.
I know exactly what you mean, I can’t get into Wintersun either. Honestly, the production on all their albums, including the new one, is pretty bad. And I’ve never been into bands with power or speed metal influences. Kai is a solid drummer, no question, but I definitely prefer his more "restrained" work with Nightwish and Swallow the Sun.
I like this as I liked their previous albums, but the production on this one is not great.Frontiers (2025) by Paradigm Blue - This North Carolina trio do a very good job of stepping back into the late 70's and sounding a lot like classic Rush. Being a big Rush fan and that my three favourite albums of theirs are 2112, A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres, I really wanted to hate this album but that hasn't been the case, far from it in fact, I'm on my third playthrough and counting. Listening on Qobuz so I fully expect it to be on the other streamers.

Sadly their two earlier albums are not available on Qobuz so I'm just playing this one over and overI like this as I liked their previous albums, but the production on this one is not great.
