Gave this a blast earlier and quite enjoyed it, will be giving it another go tonight. It's an homage to Tubular Bells and that's one enormous mountain to climb, even Mike Oldfield himself has never managed to equal it.
I didn't want to give too much away in my little blurb about it so people could pick up on it for themselves. I thought the album was really well done. I went into it a bit aprehensively after reading the description about it being inspired by Tubular Bells and pretty quickly found myself really enjoying it.
To keep things topical I'll rec this album by Goat Sound Project. It's got such an eclectic mix of influences going on and it's all very nicely executed and coherently blended. I stumbled across the band's more recent single on Bandcamp and really dug it so I bought this album and have really enjoyed it.
Deep Inside (rel. 2020) by Sound Goat Project
Here's the single that got my attention.
Vicious Circle (rel. 2024) by Sound Goat Project
Note: Deep Inside isn't available on Qobuz, but it does show up in Apple Music and Spotify for me.

Currently giving the Brett Lewis album another run through and I'm definitely enjoying it more on the second listen. I was a teenager when Tubular Bells was released and it was never far from my turntable, I must have listened to it many hundreds of times over the years, so it's no easy task to get it out of my head. With that in mind I automatically compare an album such as this with the original and that usually means being biased against the new comer. So this time around I am doing my damnedest to treat this album as a completely new and original piece of work and as such it's doing very well - just like Oldfield, he certainly has his own sound and that's making it easier to differentiate.
Found a new to me album that's pretty damn good. It's 43 minutes broken into two prog epics. Both tracks break down into sections that vary stylistically and it makes for some good listening.
Novotopia (rel. 2023) by Brett Lewis
Note: On Qobuz there is already a Brett Lewis listing for a different artist so this album is published under the "Brett Lewis Music" listing. Just FYI.
This is great but…..
If Tubular Bells didn’t exist this would be a 4/5 album, but basically it’s a near remake isn’t it, certainly a strong homage, not only are the tunes the same but looked at through a misted window, but the arrangements and even the instrument sounds are duplicated. Not that didn’t enjoy it, and it is a nice twist on TB but I can’t help thinking why would I play this rather than the Original?

@rids57: I did my best to just appreciate it for what it is which is a love letter to Tubular Bells through which I'm hearing a very good musician put some great talent on display. I think he did his best in doing the balancing act between keeping the elements that fans of TB would mark and appreciate (and that make it recognizable as he can't assume everyone that listens is going read his Bandcamp explanation) and adding some of his own flair to the sound and performance.
@dacwizard: I don't necessarily disagree with your analysis, but I suppose I'm left with this question: Does it have to be better than the original (an all-time classic) to be enjoyable and worthy of listening in its own right? Thankfully, neither artist is asking us to choose to only listen to one or the other so we have the luxury of enjoying both should we decide to. I don't want to speak for this guy, but my guess is he never intended for this album to be some kind of challenege to Tubular Bells' throne so much as, as I kinda said above to rids, a missive honoring TB's greatness through the lens of another musician's skill and creative effort.
That said, covers and tribute pieces are always a risk because they hit differently for people based on their thoughts about and connections to the original work which are as diverse and wide-ranging as the people themselves. I know when I cover some classic song, myself or with my band, the hope is to show my/our love and appreciation for the song by applying my/our skills, effort, and life experience to it to create a memorable experience for the listener in honor of the original.
To be topical I just came across a couple interesting EPs by a band named Kinglet. These represent their entire studio catalog at the moment, but my understanding from some stuff I found online is that a full length release is imminent. I'll definitely be checking that one out. If you like stuff like Chon, The Omnific, Mutiny on the Bounty, Syncatto, etc then these guys should be good for a spin.
Edit: I keep telling myself that I'm gonna proofread before I post, but then I type some long message and hit the post button reflexively and have to iron out my fat finger mistakes in an edit. Please forgive me.

Thanks for posting this, I'd already added it to my ROON library ahead of release day but forgot all about it

Thanks for the heads-up, but I've already checked it out. It popped up on Bandcamp last Friday, if I remember right. It's a killer alhum and I'm looking forward to seeing what you and @rids57 think of it. Enjoy!

I thought it was a great album and I actually preferred it to their last one. When I saw Russ Jennings listed on that track I was stoked. It was definitely a highlight.
Edit: Sutej Singh's new album is out and it's freakin' awesome!

Fantastic stuff. Could just be my album of the year so far…I’ll definitely be checking out some of his past efforts.
Lux Terminus - not so much, didn’t really do much for me this one I’m afraid.

I will definitely be checking this out later today- just trying to catch up on the many releases of late. I did have to get this one down first- great band from Norway that doesn’t seem to get a lot of attention here. I love the “unpolished” approach to their production.
