This application note from analog devices points towards a 9th order elliptical low pass filter : http://www.analog.com/UploadedFiles/...3938AN-327.pdf , for non oversampling DACs.

I've indeed seen the service manuals of old cd players which had such filters...

Ok... Searched around Head-fi and came across a very old thread about the circuit error on the board. Anyway I fixed the resistors and it sounds great....

Problem is I think I screwed up the board. Everything was fine until I started to poke around with the multimeter. I used the 2 ends of the multimeter between the ground and the r35 and now both channels are dead. Very low volume of the music and static in the background. Doesn't seem like it can be fixed....

yay! \o/ I figured it'd be the resistors causing clipping...

Perhaps someone more familiar with the schematic can chime in

There is a known circuit error in the DAC-AH that causes the clipping problem. The fix was described in an old thread that you can find by searching for "DAC-AH error".
