My display is 1440x900 yet I often have wallpapers that are much smaller.  In such cases I do not Stretch or Fill Screen.  In many instances I will shrink an image so that it is in the center of my screen with some nice (e.g.) black space around it.
 
This has been my wallpaper for the past couple of weeks.  This is one of the bigger images I'd use (supposedly it's 500x772).  The rest of my screen is black.

Here's my wallpaper made by a guy on DeviantArt from the Great wave of kanagawa ! its 1600x1200 but I use it in 1600x900 looks great !

I use this for a background on my TouchPad. Oversized, but it's pretty nice.
All the Lights in the Sky are Stars.
 
Oh and I think this is the counterpart to an earlier post of an odd looking city. Fits if you're a Grado fan.
