I read on /p/ and other places that the lomo petzvals are actually going to be quite bad, really just appealing to the lomo hipster market, who think that because the lens is brass it's super cool.

I suppose it really depends. I tend to pick up lenses that have something I like in the image. I have several lenses that have no character, but I use those for work:

Nikkor 28-70/2,8 AFS
Zeiss Makro Planar 100/2 Ai
P.C. Mikro Nikkor 85/2,8 ED Ai
Leica Elmarit 28/2,8 ASPH (no character to speak of)

But I love the 85/1,8 K for its swirly bokeh and pleasantly soft but sharp centre.

The only time I worry about perfection is when I get paid for a very specific look, but otherwise, when shooting people, etc., I prefer (as do some other photographers) softness, 'character' and a lot of natural vignetting.

I have no idea what 'hipster' is as I don't live in America but I was told what a hipster was and it seems that it is anyone who has a chip on their shoulder about something and cries about it. I think that sounds like everyone. Petzval lenses take the 85/1,8K to the next level. Anyway, I'm in my thirties: I'm not worried if someone calls me a hipster.

Wow you don't like the Zeiss, I'm dying to get one.

Dream lens right now is the 24-70 f/2.8 Carl Zeiss. Gorgeous lens. Either that or the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. The only major gear upgrade I'm looking at at the moment is upgrading my a100 body to the a77... I did a photoshoot for a band I'm good friends with te other day, I've PPed a couple so far, I'll upload a couple later.

Oh, no, I love that lens: no distortion, decent bokeh, sharp, and typical Zeiss fall off. It is great for makro and for product photos. It is a sterile lens otherwise, and that is why I put it in that pile. The 85/1,8K is a much more interesting lens for 'artistic' shooting.

I rented the Zeiss before, after taking over 500 shots, I like it more than my 85 f1.4G. The only issue I have is it's narrow DOF and manual focus, not so great with kids but perfect for model and product shoots.
