There is a research study showing that, in reading, human brain recognizes words by their first and last letters. That's why I always mistakes the word "photography" as "pornography", when I see the title of this thread.

Thanks for the comment and nicely worded critique! I agree the pier is what stood out to me as well, specifically the two larger poles. This was pretty much straight from Photomatix, so I guess I need to do a little cleaning up in PS.

Your next to last was my favorite as well. The only thing is everything is right in the center of the frame. The horizon also appears slightly tilted to the left, which is something easily fixed in PS. But as you described you were rushed to get the shot so you only had so much time. It appears you have the eye, just didn't have time to get the shot.

If only I go back in time, there are lots of shots I've missed and wish I had the chance to go back and get!
