Believe it or not, this was taken by a Canon Rebel XSi and the kit lens.

Looked surreal to begin with, and very minor PP was done (temperature and sharpening).

I absolutely believe it, as I've been there, though never at the right time to get a shot like that. Nice work! It's a blessing to live in California sometimes, eh?

I really like this picture. I only wish you hadn't chopped off the top of the boat. You could have stood to take less of the reflection so that the entire boat fit. IMHO.

I have others that have the whole boat. Unfortunately, the background for the top of the mast is a very busy shoreline. You can just see it creeping in at the top of that picture. I stood on the highest point I could find, but there just wasn't any ground high enough to get the whole mast without the background.

I need to get rid of the red thing at the bottom too. This is the only shot that has it, but it also has the best position of the boat.

Edit: Here's the boat with the whole mast. It's not nearly as effective IMO. It doesn't help that the boat's centered horizontally.

The answer is photoshop. Send me the original and I can show you what I mean.

scompton, I'm not a fan of chopping the mast off either. I'd rather see the shoreline (which frankly isn't bad) than half the mast.

That's a nice shot, Wil.

^^
I like the detail in the face, but maybe leave more blank space on the side of the photo where he is looking. I think that might make the composition a little more pleasing. Also, maybe try and get a little more definition around the top of the head; it starts to blend in with the background a bit too much. Other than that, it looks pretty good!

as bperboy, my first tought when I saw the picture was that your dad was too much on the right. You should have kept the same proportion but on the other side. The way you took it, it looks like your dad wants to get away from the frame.
